Terrible MPG

  Oyster Card
I put about £8 in a time and the petrol light comes on almost instantly. I'm currently filling up daily.
I'm a student so I can't just buy a whole tank at least not until 22nd when I get some money.
Is there anything cost effiecient I can do, It's a 1.2 Clio I already drive very sensibaly and go into 5th asap.
Corner where safe most the time in 3rd.

I was thinking about cleaning the air filter tommorow, would i benifit from new spark plugs.
I don't know when it was last serviced as I've only got it 800 miles ago.
Also how hard is the fuel filter to replace and where is it located.

I'm currently running 31psi front and 28psi rear anything I can do there to increase mpg?

One last question, I promise lol. How long do you reckon I've got left MPG wise when the fuel light coes constantly on. not when it just comes on when you go round roundabouts etc..

Cheers guys, really running on a budget hear as I've been wallet raped by my insurance.

your driving in fifth gear all the time even at 30mph? if mine was empty £8 wouldnt make the light go off what year 1.2 is it? might be better off buying a scooter

Air filter change, new plugs, a bottle of injector cleaner (maybe not a full bottle, enough to mix with £8 of fuel though LOL). Generally a good service.

Had a scooter mate, kept getting terrorised by all the car drivers so i thought if you can't beat them join em.
Although I do miss being able to filter through traffic and if someones cut you up and your in traffic lift their driver side wiper up as you filter past them.

I'll get some Redex to mix with my fuel and some new plugs tommorow, who knows I might even push the boat out and buy a new filter lol.
£8 is a bit underest. really about £10 but you get the point, it's a 1994 Clio. 71k on the clock.

defo change the air filter, its the main cause ive always found with cars munching on fuel

I had the same problem mate on my MK1 1.2, I was only gettin bout 180 miles to £30 (and thats motorway miles) So i changed every filter as well as the spark plugs but with no luck.
Turns out it was the coil pack (at least I think thats wat its called, the leads that comes from your spark plugs) Its a common problem on clios of that age, I picked one up from a local scrappy for £10 and it was easy to fit

Hope this helps

Have to look into that mate because compaired to my Dad's Mitshibishi 1.8 I've got the gas guzzler lol.
Can anyone confirm the name of them parts and any checks I can do.

I drive in mine at 30 in 5th 1500rpm at 30 is about right for crusing along.

But my clio seems to guzzle fuel unless i fill the tank right up the first half seems to take ages to dissapear then again £10 gets me over half a tank yet it still takes a further £20 to fill it.

Come to think about it "Clio MK1" do you mean the HT Leads, as thats what they're called as I remember.
Checked mine on the Clio, number two was all gunked up inside with s**t and a couple others had lost there seal so needed to be bodged in there with a piece of paper at one side - hey it worked for my bike lol.
I'll buy a new set to be on the safe side regardless of whether it solves my fuel problem or not.

the fuel guages are quite mad but you get used to it,you probobly about a fiver reserve which would tell you why your fuel lights coming on asap.also driving around in fifth at 30mph is the best for your engine or fuel economy, theirs no power this low your really just putting load on the engine stick it in 3rd or fourth i wouldnt put my car into fifth until at least 50mph

Well typically its 1st to 10 2nd to 20 etc etc until you get to 30 then they say 4th usually when your crusing but i usually change around 2000rpm driving normally and 2000rpm is around 32 on the speedo on my car in 4th.

Tried doing the same thing in my mates 1.4 though when i had to drive his it didnt like it.

Just filled up again with £8, went for 20 miles and the fuel light came on again lol.
Me and a few mates are all chipping in we're putting about £25 in and are going to london for the night so I'll keep an eye on it then, I don't thrash the car I'd say normal driving speed.

I est. the tank will fill to about half way, any idea what I should expect to see milage wise.

P.S: My HT leads are crap, the rubber seals are weathered and to sit on the plugs tight it needs something wedged in there too, but the car is not misfiring and is running smooth.
Also I checked under the airbox and what looks like the carb mouth has all crap in it like air filter oil, should I get something to pour down there to clear any possible dirt?

Before I went to the 182 - I had a 1.2 RN on a V reg. I was getting 350-380 miles on a full tank.

Will buy a full tank on the 22nd and see then, I do stupid little journeys in it but I do think it is a bit extra hungry for a little 1.2.
