Test Driving Peoples New Cars

When you buy a new car how do you know that it has not been on 10 test drives and had the mileometer reset??? If they dont sell them as new what happens to them? If every 3 dealerships has a trophy for people to test drive then thats prob 50-100 cars getting ragged that are supposed to be sold as new? I would like to think reseting the mileometer never happens but i think that would be naive.

Its probably been ragged from the production line to the yard and from the yard to the trailer too.

Then I get it, and it gets ragged some more.:D

Trophys 1 - 6 will be well and truly thrashed as they are press cars.

dealers reset the mileage all the time on vag cars (you can do this by simple switch/button combinations, if the car has covered less than say 50 miles), i assume other dealers do exactly the same

off topic what happened to the thread about the Astra VXR review, its disappeared?

Someone moved it to other marques.

do dealers do this then, i.e. blatently "hi sir, yes it has 6 miles on the clock, brand new" even if you order the car 4 weeks in advance they may use it as a test car?

its been cleverly moved to other marques so that you cannot post in it again being a forum user, as has happened with a lot of threads created by forum users who cannot yet be members

Yes they do.... I remember going to test drive an ST170 when they first came out, but the dealer had no demos at garage, they did however have a customer car that had just been PDId all shiny and new, waiting on new owner coming to pick it up that evening. So the salesguy just said we could take that one for a spin and he would "deal with the mileage later" So we took it out and booted the sh*t out of it for about 20 miles.

I test drove a 182 that somebody had just bought, ragged it and was almost crashed into by someone pulling out on me.Not good practice from the dealers IMO.

My ex-boss used to get a mate of his to clock all our company cars before the contract was up(so no extras to pay)and they all went back to reputable dealers Audi,BMW etc.... to be re-sold to the unsuspecting public:( Thats one of the reasons I will never buy a used car.

felt like it when he made us all redundant!!! But hes a mate I knew for 14 years.:( And his christmas bonus bought me my 172 3years ago!! Apparently its common practice for small businesses to clock their contract cars.

Ive told this story before, but I think it is funny.

I know a guy who used to clock cars, bought a high miler from the auction, unscrewed the dash to clock it, and there was a not saying "Oh no, Not again".

Lol.

I only bought my new un cos it had only arrived 2 days prior to me seeing it and was still covered in stickers and had the seats covered in plastic.

the garage i went to do use "new" cars as demos - the guy said so on the phone when I asked what they had in

"yep we got a red one - its just out on a test drive"

"oh so its a demo then"

"no sir...its new"

no way I was buying that "new" car!!!
