Test drove new Clio last week

  Smurf R26R 450bhp
I took the new Clio sport out for a test drive as was considering to get 1 as a daily drive.
Where shall I start I found the Clio amazing to look at seats were pretty comfortable, but very surprised they haven't done recaros as a option, the new dash lay out is very well done not too over crowded with silly buttons.
I took it for a 20min or so test drive was only allowed to have it in sport mode and not race :( said was to do with insurance or something, I found the Clio erm boring the flappy paddles don't change as quick as you would like them to and on several occasions I had to pull the paddle twice in order to get it to change into gear. The acceleration isn't bad to be fair but defiantly lacks some toque, if I'm to get one it will be getting remapped, fmic and de-cat and exhaust this should hopefully give me 240bhp ish. I feel I shouldnt need to have to modify the Clio in order to just get the car into a more fun way, but this is how the Clio should already come. My old 197 and R27 seemed more fun to drive than the new Clio tbh. The steering didn't seem that responsive either compared to other Renault sports.
I'm I put off enough to buy one ATM I would say yes so will wait and see if they do any limited editions that might have something to put the sport back into the Clio so I think will just make my R faster for now.

So you're basically going to modify a car to 240bhp when you've just said you don't like the gearbox?

I can just picture the service managers face when he plugs in your 18k pride and joy to find he can and will void the warranty at the drop of an injector.

I spoke to the manager and said just a remap and exhaust will turn blind eye to but obviously if start trying to go for to much power and damage engine will then void warranty. My R26R never had problem with doing warranty work when I was running a stage 2, but then I did a piston and rod obviously couldn't be done under warranty so I just forged it and now running 360bhp :approve: I would only take the Clio to 245bhp max so the engine will be fine and if it did pop I will just have a new project to forge. I will wait 6 months to see if renault do any changes to the box as I know when I had my 197 what was one of the first ones out it had the early box on it and when I got R27 it had the later box on it so knowing Renault will change soothing on the box. I'm pretty sure it could be just a map alteration to enable you to change quicker because the Clio cup race cars have the same box but change quicker so has to be down to a map, but will look into that as know few people that deal with the Clio cup cars

Hi smurf, i think i read on here that a software update was available to sort the gearbox which had delayed the demo release to dealers:)

Thanks,

So they have upgraded the gearbox software to give better shifts? and eliminating the delay some have complained about

Renault i guess matt:)

  V6 255, 172's, JCW,
I'm guessing this is the new Clio Renault Sport 200t ? Or have Renault introduced the paddle shift on lower spec'd Clio's now too?

Personally, i wouldn't touch a brand new car by modification. Especially not on the strength of the manager 'saying' he would turn a blind eye to it :-/

There is no new gear box map.

Jeremy Townsend who's pretty good on things like this over on renaultsport.co.uk confirmed there has been NO revision to the gearbox software.

Worth a try it sounds like a belter

It certainly goes well going to do some more work to it through the winter want 450bhp ish I'm hoping then will be purely track and show car, that's another reason been looking into the Clio as a new car for weekends

Buy a Fiesta ST

Takes a lot for me to say that but every "drivers car" should be a manual IMO. I've always been a Renaultsport supported and enjoy my 172 but the new Clio is too big, numb with a ridiculous gearbox. Plus the Ford is £2k cheaper to start with.
