Testing the alarm in a 172

  Mini Cooper S sport

Sorry if this is a silly question - Ive just picked up my year-old 172, and I have no idea what the alarm sounds like!

I will have to make do with the factory-fitted Renault alarm system for the moment, until I can get something better.

My question is, how do you test the alarm? The last time I had one on a car, I just wound the windows down and locked it - but that doesnt seem to work on the Clio, even when I put my arm through the window.

Have you given the ultrasonics a chance to arm? If not, then the sensor doesnt know its surroundings and so will not notice anything that shouldnt be there..give it about a min - 90 secs to arm the sonics...should go off then when you try and put your arm in.

Seam to be able to set it off if you press the key and open the door almost at the same time, done this a couple of times now. Other than that try opening the door with the key, should leave the alarm armed. Or do whats suggested above.

or arm sit very still for a min or 2, (until the RAID red led goes out) then wave you arms about and it should sound... test the bonnet and boot by locking with them open you should get a beep wanring you the syytem knows they are open.

Tried all of the above and nothing happens, therefore I think this car either doesnt have an alarm, or the one it has doesnt work.

Im going to contact the dealer first thing tomorrow (after spending a sleepless night imagining it being broken into out on the street).

Which alarm would you recommend for a reasonable price, say £250-£300?

There doesnt appear to be, and having read the other thread Alarm not going off by Gav76, I can suddenly see why.

It was brought over directly from France, therefore the alarm cannot have been fitted as standard like they are here.

I bought it (TODAY!) on the understanding that it did have an alarm, so Ill have to get one fitted myself, and Ill be expecting the dealer to contribute to the cost! I just hope no-one tries to break in until then.

Therefore, which system would you advise? Id really appreciate your help. Is there an average cost for a Cat 1 alarm?

she standard renault alarms do the job and work off the original fob, they are £300, but get the dealer to do it for free if he said there was one, presuming it s a renault dealer you fgot the car from.

renault use cobra compact alarms that work off the original key fob. they should come as standard spec as they are fitted at the import centres. would cost you about £250 fitted at a dealer.
