TFT LCD Screens - Cup Holder Mounted

I want to get a TFT LCD Monitor for the car to be mounted in the cup holder slots under the climate control like so :

What is the biggest (or most sensible) screen size I can fit in this position ? Will I get away with 7" or will it need to be a 6" screen ? The screen will be widescreen.

If anybody has a tape measure and their car to hand, could you measure the dimensions of the cup holder space for me ?

Cheers for any help, very much appreciated !

Cheers Malice, 7" should fit perfect then going by the photo above, looks very good indeed in my opinion ! My PS2 may have found a new home then !

What tom said.

When I was looking for a screen and deciding where it would go I figured two places..

1) the cup holders

2) take out the centre air vents and get a bodyshop place to fabricate a holder for it.

or secret option number 3 (the one I went for)

Get a motorised unit that fits neatly into the space for the stereo, this proved to be the most expensive way of doing it though.

I am hoping I can get it all working for under £200 initially as I already have the PS2. Would be good to install it in the boot but still be able to use it in the house if needed.

Dont want to bother with a PC or anything like that, just want to be able to watch DVDs and play games via the monitor, should be an easy install.

Yeah I was looking out for screen H/Us like what _KDF descirbed they can come in at a grand! I was offered one for £600 that was worth £1200 but i didnt have the guts to tell the girlfriend I had spent all that money on another H/U - plus it aint removable or a face off.

I am going for a standalone monitor for around £100, not forking out that much for a flip out as my mate has just had his stolen and it put me off as you cannot take it with you.

How easy would it be to have a bracket made that would hook into the pen slot under the CD/Temp/Time display on the MKII Clio 172 and then hang down over the air vents and CD player ? Will a firm make this for you as I am unsure if the monitor I want will fit in the cup holders and you may not be able to see it when the gear stick is in 1st, 3rd or 5th.

For people who have the monitor mounted in the cup holders, do you find the view is restricted by the gear stick ?

Its a 5.6" screen.

As for being able to see it when gear lever is in 1st, 3rd or 5th, you shouldnt have it on when driving so where is the problem.

Whats the best/easiest way to wire up the tv to the battery. with the wires hidden of course! how easy is it to take aout parts of the cup holder/dash to run the wires through there???

The cup holder comes out really easy, remove the ashtray, put your fingers in the hole and pull up and back with the cup holder assembly, mind you dont break the clips.

As for the wiring I cut off the cig. lighter attachment and connected the wires to the cig. lighter [using an inline fuse ].

He means draw the power from the ciggarette lighter, its got wiring for about 10amps anyway so should do just fine.

Can I just ask Do you peeps leave the screen in place or do you disconnect and take out/hide when not in the car? Are they permanently fixed in place?

Just thinking about thieving tea leaves!!
