the best RPM for motorway

  Fiat Panda 100hp
whats the best RPM that I can run at for motorway jorneys? For the best fuel consumption?

Yeah, for the fuel consumption tests, they do it at 56mph, so whatever the revs are at that speed would be best...in top (5th or 6th) gear before anyone tries it in second!! :rasp:

It's amazing how high you can get your MGP if you really stick to 55-60mph.

I can do 45mpg in my mod'd valver and 60+mpg in the girlfriends 1.2 16v at those speeds....

LOL!!!

Get the revs as low as possible 40mph is better than 50mph. 30mpg is usually about the best as its almost idling in 5th gear.

And i bet you lot who drive at 55mph on the motorway also moan about truck drivers sat up your arse aswell.

You dont want the revs too low. At 30mph an engine uses more petrol in 5th than it does in 3rd. Dont ask me why but it does!!

my mate says that, he thinks he knows everything about cars, and most of the time hes wrong.
is he right for a change?

Personally I'd rather do less miles per gallon and reduce my risk of falling asleep at the wheel or being shunted off the motorway by some foreign truck driver...

;) :rasp:

  M2 Competition
Cruise along in fifth gear at about 80, if you sit at 55mph it'll take fecking ages to get anywhere, and time means money!

55-60mph is best for most cars MPG, too low and the engine is labouring, not working efficiently so you'll end up with rubbish MPG. If you're that concerned about MPG get a diesel, DCi's will do 50 when ragged round town, and up to 90 if you drive at 55-60 on the M-way.

I've tried getting the most MPG in cars in the past (for a few minutes till I get bored) using the CLio trip and 25mph in a dci in 5th gear and the engine and box don't like it but the trip shoots well over 100mpg increase to 50 and 60 and it drops below 100mpg.

Yeah I would expect that edde but i bet it would go even higher over 100 if you did 25 in 3rd or even 4th. Better for the ngine not to be laboured. And yeah the boredom factor has stopped me trying, especially as I'd have to do it for a ftull tank-no trip comp!!

I tried that it did't I think one big thing is you cannot keep your foot steady enough and thees more power so more litle bits of acceleration.

I got my best ever score the other day, 75 miles along the A30 down into deepest Cornwall, 43.8 mpg. This included a bit of fast stuff to avoid boredom, but mainly kept to 65-75 mph. Using Optimax but I've changed today over to Sainsburys 97 RON cos of the cost. I'll see how it compares.

Sainsburys 97 is the best stuff to get (cost Vs miles per tank). I've tried them all!

FFS, whats the damn point of owning a hot hatch and driving it like your grandad.

I mean really come on!

You should be chasing everything up the tarmac ;)

Well one of my techy friends swears its true and he usually is right!! Something to with it being less effcient or summat!

Its probably because if you're pushing too high a gear for the road speed, your throttle will actually be further open - thus spitting fuel in while the engine sruggles to breath properly. Thats how I've always though of it anyway.

Totally agree. I can think of other cars that I'd rather be trying to set mpg records in. I only ever check my mpg to make sure its lower than 28.

I drive 80 miles a day(mostly motorway) , hence I sold my MK V Golf GTi to get a runner, the little clio 172, impressed it returns 38.6mpg.

Sit arund 65-80 on the M4
