The Clio is BROKEN :(

  Clio Dynamique Noir
Was driving my car few weeks ago now, stopped at a junction then all of a sudden it just wouldnt go any further...pushed it into a bus stop and waited 2 and a half hours for the AA to come out..got it towed to renault few days later and theyve said the gearbox, clutch and drive shaft have all gone..all just at the same time and out of the blue! They said i was looking at minimum £1900 to get it fixed!! :( took it there about 2 weeks ago and have left it there since, just dont know what to do about it and im going travelling in 3 weeks so dont really have the money to spend in it :(

Any suggestions?

I forgotten who the Southern/London specialist is but I would get it to theirs before writing it off. Someone will be along to let you know who it is soon.

You know if the AA will tow it from where it is now, to another garage?

Thanks peeeoplee!! Need to see if I can get it repaired for a reasonable price now!

Get one of the specialists to have a look. I wouldn't take what Renault have said as gospel truth.

As said really, driveshafts you'd be looking averagish £150 a side to replace including labour.

Clutch 2/300 at a ball park guess and gearbox I have no idea. 1900 quid is hefty!

I got a gearbox for my 1.2 for £80 inc delivery clutch kit inc fitting £329.

As said Mark, don't believe this. I wouldn't even trust them that all 3 things have gone to be honest. The odds are tiny. Make sure they don't do the work and take it elsewhere. That quote is a joke!

Why did they say a minimum? I hate this crack, there a renault garage, they should be able to easily give you a price it will deffo be.they make it up as they go along to see how much they can get out of you

Cheers for all the help and comments! Tbh its only a 1.2 but i know if it was in perfect working condition i could probli get 2-3000 tops for it and in its current condition i could strip the alloys, mods etc and sell them off but then only sell the car as scrap and get a couple hundred quid for it! If i can get it repaired for under 500 i think its worth it, more than scrapping it..?

I agree with everyone else, take it elsewhere cause £1900 is a joke & Renault do take the piss sometimes with prices!
Hope you get it sorted mate!

all 3 wouldnt go at once!!
id be incredibly suspicious and take the car back tbh, look over it yourself, its pretty easy to see if the clutch and driveshaft have gone!

and 2 weeks to get parts??
since the shaft and box need to come out anyway for a clutch change, the labour shouldnt be too much more than changing a gearbox,
about 2-3hours.

personally id take it to a trusted local garage,
wouldnt bother with a renault specialist for a 1.2 tbh

dont always go by them, me mother had her volvo diagnosed and they came back with a 2000 pound bill, but when we priced the things that actually needed doing it came to about 600 quid. so i suppose it would be better to get a second opinion. anyway i wish u all the best fella,

Cheers for all the help and advice everyone!! My dads been phoning round a couple of garages he knows and has managed to get a MUCH cheaper quote for refurbed and conditioned parts. But what theyre saying is that it is very unlikely for a driveshaft to shatter in a gearbox like what has happened to my car on its own. So theyre saying that because I have lowered the car this has had something to do with it by putting more pressure and torque onto the car. I did quite a bit of research before carrying out the work and hadnt heard of any related issues or problems. Maybe they were on there way out anyway being a 51 plate car?...Anyone heard of related problems with lowering their clio?
ANND I have finally arranged a tow company to pick my car up from Renault as its been sitting there for a few weeks now  I went there just to let them know that someone would be collecting the car this week and they tried charging me £80 for a diagnostic charge!!! I was like Whaaaat?! All they did in the way of 'diagnostics' was to look at the gearbox oil that was leaking from the car and to find it contained metal shards, likely to be the gearbox / driveshaft inside shreading....so this might not be the problem after all seeing as they havent even taken anything apart to look at it!! :S
Sorry for the essay! Appreciate any feedback or anyone ar*ed to read all of this!! Thanks!!

Tell renault to fcuk off. Collect car and take it to someone decent.

Get 2nd hand box and driveshaft, new clutch kit and drive off happy.

DONE!

  1.2 clio
Parts for a 1.2 are fairly cheapish u could get the parts then just pay someone to fit them... Renault garage are a mug off dude they slap like extra money on an item coz they can. Look up in ur locale area accident repair garage and I would say they will quote u half of wot renault have.. It sucks that it's just b4 ur goin traveling

I had the same problem, i was on my way to work and then went to pull away at a junction and nothing, took it to a garage, it was the gearbox, and driveshaft, clutch was fine. got the car back 2months later and then 2 miles down the road, it happened again, waited another 2weeks for repairs and parts etc. it ended up costing me about £680.
if your getting quoted that much money, let it go mate get a new car or summin, unless it is really worth it.

once one thing goes more problems follow.

Hey guys

I know this is an old thread but I have been travelling and out of the country for 6 months!! And the Clio is still not fixed!! :S So before I left I managed to get a quote for 480 for all the work, that is if it is only the gearbox and clutch that needs repairing.
I have been told again that I should take the suspension off and replace the stock springs and coils and alloys as they would be putting pressure on the gearbox on such a 'little' car. Just wondered if anyone had actually heard of this or it would be possible? Im going to start ringing around tomorrow, might phone KTEC tomorrow and some other Renault specialists and see if they can shed any light on it.
I would fix the car and sell it but Ive looked at a few cars that I would like but the insurance companies wont even give me a reasonable quote for anything. Bit of a joke imo! And if I have to drive it Id rather it wasnt stock again. Think Im starting to grow out of the 1.2 :approve:
Anyways thanks anyone for re reading the thread and appreciate any advice or help anyone can give! Thanks!

oversized wheels can be bad for some cars.

but I'd imagine you'd have to have 18's or something equally as r****d for a clio to be affected

  Clio Dynamique Noir
Sorry for not replying been a bit lazy with the clio! Started reading through the forum again and really want to get the car fixed!!

Okay so I have spoken to Ktec and they dont think that it would be the suspension that would have caused the problem but they are going to look at the suspension and adjust anything that needs it as I still think there may be something wrong with it as I installed it myself
They are also going to do all the work, the gearbox and clutch.
Costing me:
500 for labour
100 for clutch
130 for (second hand) gearbox and p&p
54 for MOT
90 to tow my car to KTEC

So near enough £900!! What do you think? Do you think this is too much? I mean I know it is only a 1.2 but I think its worth more if i fix the car and then sell it rather than scrapping it and not getting a lot for it! And ill only have the car until i can get a REASONABLE quote on a CS!

Any help appreciated!
Thank!!

Think you could still get it cheaper. Benefit of being a 1.2 is you don't need a true specialist to do the work, the RS ones take a special touch but I'd ring round a bit more tbh. Source your own parts as well

Okay...so I have finally go my car booked in to get fixed. I have booked it in at Rentech, seem like a very nice bunch of lads plus they underquoted Ktec by about £200!! So thats good..I got it towed down to them to firstly to be fully diagnosed and they took one look at the gearbox and said the insides were 'blown up'. HA!!! So Im hoping and most mechanics I have spoken to have said that it is very unlikely to be the suspension or the wheels causing the problem...just general wear and tear! But im getting the guys at Rentech to check out the suspension anyway as I fitted it myself and just want it to be checked over properly by someone who knows what they are doing  The cars 10 years old so hasnt done too bad I dont think. Also spoke to Fred and he was a really big help!! Got a second hand gearbox from cliospares and having a clutch fitted too. Going to have a service on her aswell as shes been sitting on a drive for 6 months! But I should be getting the Clio back early next week, fingers crossed! Finally! But Im soo annoyed as I looked inside the car just before it got towed and I think the sunroof is leaking! AGAIN! Thanks for all your comments and advice, should be driving MY car again next week, just hope its not more hassel than its worth!!...

  Clio Dynamique Noir
Okay so my car is down at rentech and i got a secondhand gearbox from cliospares, having read about them on here and being recommended by k-tec...so the gearbox was installed today and they phone me and say the gearbox is f***ed  cliospares offer a 3 month warranty on the box so i can get a new one from them but im stil going to have to pay for rentech installing 2 gearboxes and looking at getting my car back end of this week not the beginning! Looks like everything that could go wrong has! Wondering wether the car is more hassle than its worth :dapprove:

I feel your pain. I had a refurbished gearbox fitted which developed a fault after a couple of months. The re-refurb was free but it did mean another gearbox change. Thankfully me and a chap from the forum fitted it the second time around on the drive. It's a risky business buying a gearbox or engine. And yes I've come to the conclusion that MY car is more hassle than it's worth and it'll be sold or broken up next year, then I'll probably be going German or Japanese.

  Clio Dynamique Noir
Ah s**t, hopefully when i speak to them tomorrow ill be able to get some money back or something as the box was clearly broken when it was sent out...dont know how theyll take that one, sure theyll find some reason they cant pay for the installation!! How was installing a gearbox yourself? ye id love to get a one series diesel..if i could afford insurancue and upkeep at 19 :(

  172DD Cup
i think breakers will only warrant the box and not any labour charges. i'm not sure where you stand legally though, go have a read on consumeractiongroup.co.uk

gearbox was alright. i probably only did about 25% of the removal as i was learning from the chap that was helping, but i fitted it myself as i knew how it came out. managed to drop it in from the top :)

one series diesel are seriously fast, i had a job keeping up with them a few weeks back.
i'm liking the look of 3 series coupes at the moment, just not the 'badge' that goes with them. an A3 would be the sensible option.

  Clio Dynamique Noir
Ah cheers matey ill check them out! Mm, youre definately right but whether they have any morals or sympathy im sure ill find out too! How long did it take you to do? Ye theyre niiice think i would prefer a 1M though ;) but also would love a new a3, good shout! However dont think my insurance company would agree with me!
