The junkyard dog

  Renault 5 GT Turbo
I sold my last phase 1 after FCS last year and have regretted it ever since. So today I managed to save an early phase 1 from a scrapyard on the other side of Manchester.

To be fair, it's really not too bad although at some point in its life has been owned by an arse clown who badly fitted shiney trinkets to it such as a chromed ecu battery cover and ecu cover, cheap mesh airfilter and tastefull yellow silicone hoses.

On the plus side, there's half a tank of fuel in it and it's only done 89k. The engine sounds sweet enough but there's the old phase 1 sticky throttle body.
The rear wiper arm and trim is missing, front fogs are gone, no stereo or parcel shelf. Probably no speakers either.
Central locking doesn't work, exhaust is blowing by the front. Needs a cv joint and ball joint.
Came on steel wheels but I've got some 8x15 schmidts to stick on it until I can find a cheap set of OZ F1s.
Rear arches are rusting and it's dented all over.

It is however perfect for my needs. With a bit of TLC, she should be a good car and if I decide to sell one of my GT Turbos later in the year, I'll be sending it to clioturbo.co.uk for a stage 1 or 2 turbo conversion.

I'll update the thread as I go along but don't expect progress to be too quick

One final thing, anyone know the common cause for non working central locking? The fuse is fine.

Thanks.

Thanks @jesus

So today the local scrapyard yielded a few usefull parts.
Rear wiper arm and fixing bolts for the wiper motor.
The small trim piece behind the wiper arm.
Rear parcel shelf
Inner tailgate trim
16 wheel bolts
Headlamp bulb plug
All for the price of £4

Next was a pair off ball joints and a set of pagid front pads.

These fitted without any fuss but when it came to changing wheels I hit a slight snag.
The calipers are touching the inside of the wheels which leaves me with 2 ways of sorting it.

1: grind the calipers down enough to allow clearance with hot brakes.

2: 5 or 10mm spacers but will need to buy longer wheel bolts too.

Seeing as I'm going to be refitting some original wheels at some point I'll just grind the calipers for now I think.

Not had chance to clean her yet but she's looking a lot better already

£410 was the purchase price. To be honest i'd have done better to just break it but at the moment, funds are limited and this was the best that I could afford :weary:
It also keeps another on the road which is all good.
I keep finding things up with it. There must be a loose connection on the interior fan as I put them on earlier and nothing happened. Shut the door and they came on. Also the trunking for the heaters is loose somewhere so will need sorting.
Not got any further with the central locking issue yet but I have found another fault. The interior light won't turn off so I've pulled the plug off the light for tonight.

Thanks for the positive comments guys

Good to see another kept on the road mate.
But why oh why are everyone else's scrapyards so cheap. I swear the ones local to me think they are main dealers selling brand new items.

Great car! Worth it even with the problems, worst case strip it and track it ;) then no electrical problems to worry about anyway on the interior!

Fridays are grinding days :grinning:

As such, I've removed plenty of excess meat from the callipers today and now have wheels that clear the brakes. I've taken off a little more than I needed to compensate for hot brakes on track if I decide to use these wheels on a trackday

Today is also the first time I've driven the car and it was awful. Something is seriously wrong on the front end as the car goes where it likes and the steering wheel is all over the place. I've done the ball joints so will have to inspect the rack tomorrow in daylight and see what it's like. Maybe top mounts too
