The story of the £3.5k fuel system bill...

  Polo Bluemotion
Hey guys, I just thought id tell you the story of what ive been through in the last 7 days, and how not all Renault dealers are bad....

Last Wednesday evening i was on the way to the mrs's house after id finished work. As i was going around a rather large roundabout, pretty much every light on the dash of my 2005 dci100 started to flash. I lay of the throttle, but nothing, they still continued to flash. I put my hazzards on, and crawled to where it was safe to pull over. I turned the car off, left it a minute, then tried to start it......nothing, it was trying, but just wouldnt start at all. This was a car that has started perfectly in the 30k ish miles that ive had it. I ended up getting recovered, and taken home.

The next day I started the task of finding somewhere to look at my car. I know most of you wont agree, but i only use Renault garages (mainly Renault Manchester+Oldham) as id rather spend my money having something diagnosed, resolved and warrantied as fast as possible. The only garage that could see my car on Friday, was Renault Bolton, a garage i didnt even know existed.

Thursday afternoon, i got the car dropped off, and left them to it. Within 3 hours, id had a phone call advising me that all 4 injectors needed replacing. For anyone that cares, apparantly, a normal common rail holds about 400 bar, mine had about 200bar, and only one injector was doing anything. So i agreed to the £200 price, and left them to it.

Two to three hours passed, and i got another call. Apparantly the car had had its four new injectors, was driven round to the valet bay to be cleaned, when the dash lighst started flashing (again). So it was taken back in the garage, and put back on the computer. The mechanic believed that theyre was metal particles in the fuel system, and wanted my permission to cut my fuel filter up to double check.

Cutting a rather long story a little shorter, it was eventually discovered that that my fuel pump had decided to shed little metal filings that had then disagreed with my injectors. Due to the way a common rail diesel engine works (which i didnt realise at the time) in order to maintain its super high pressure, the fuel is pumped from the tank to the engine, and back again, in a continuous loop.

So this is where things start to get serious. Straight away, we knew it definately needed a new pump, which in itself is £397.71+vat. As this is a "big job" apparantly renault have recommended guidelines, for things to do+parts to replace when/if a pump does this. These guidelines recommend replacing everything to with the fuel; injectors (done already),fuel pump, fuel filters, all fuel pipes (including the ones going to the tank, then back) the fuel tank itself. Obviously, its possible to just replace the pump, but due to the nature of how the system works, theres nothing to say there wasnt any particles in the rest of the system that could cause the same fault in a few miles time, and id be back to square one.

So off they went to price everything up, before they did anything (bearing in mind the injectors where already on)......Saturday morning, they got back to me. The total quote for the full job was £3237.09 :quiet:. Just to put this into perspective, 3 weeks earlier, Renault Manchester (same group) had bid me £3900 for the car against a brand new one. Oh, and lets remember that the car hasnt had its fourth birthday yet either.

Naturally, my immediate reaction was im not spending that money, on a car worth not much more. It would of probably ended up on here for sale, as a perfect transplant donor.

I explained these thoughts to the guys at Renault Bolton, who then agreed, to knock 20% of the cost, which then brought the figure down to around £2.5k. After getting the technician to explain in great detail to my grandfather, who was a mechanic most of his life before he retired, what exactly it needed and why, my grandad reassured me they wernt b*llshitting me, it did need the parts they had said, and fuel pumps etc are big money.

After negotiating a full service (as it was pretty much having one anyway) within the price, i eventually agreed on the work to start :dapprove:

It was made very clear, that although i appreciate that the car is out of the 3 year manufacturers warranty, an owner of a 3 and a half year old renault should not be deciding whether to write the car off due to the size of a repair bill, that has ultimately been caused by a major component on the car failing.

The hugely helpful service lady, Ella, then advised that due to the cost of the bill, and whats happened, she was going to raise the matter with Renault UK. Again, trimming the story down, i got a call from a hugely helpful+very nice guy from Renault Customer services. He asked a huge amount of questions, from where i got the car, what i think of it, etc etc. he admitted he has never heard of this ever happening with a clio before, let alone one thats 3.5 years old with 53k on it. He advised he wanted to have a chat with Renault Bolton, then he would get back to me, which on Wednesday, he did. He agreed that due to the cost of the repair, the fact this is my 2nd clio from a renault dealer, how new the car is etc, Renault uk would contribute 35% (thats on top of the garages 20%) to the cost of the repair.

So basically, starting from a almost £3.5k bill and a car thats worthless, I ended up paying £1780, and i got the car back yesterday. So for anyone still reading, Renault Bolton have been superb, as in 6 days (including weekend) they diagnosed the fault, priced it up, got the parts, and did the work required.

Yes, £1780 is still alot of money, but i have been assured by all people ive discussed this with, considering the cost of the parts alone that the car has had, and not including the labour, from any garage anywhere, it is value for whats been done.

I just want to make it known that some garages, such as Renault Bolton (which is by far the best+most efficent garage ive ever dealt with) are not all bad at all. Also the efficency of Renault customer service too. I was expecting them to say they will give me a couple of hundred to help out, not 35%!!

I know the story may of dragged on abit, but i know there could be people who could find themselves in a similar position to myself with a car out of warranty.......i would certainly recommend speaking to Renault Customer services to see if they will help out, even if the garage wont.

Interesting read, sounds like you were just very unlucky with your car. I can vouch for Renault Bolton too, good guys there. And I'm glad that Renault actually coughed up a bit of money too, I would of been mightily pissed of if that happened to me and they refused to help out, especially 6 months out of warranty.

still an awful lot of money, i would of been tempted to get 2nd hand fuel pump, and injectors, and just clean out the pipes and tank. it would of done fine.

so it needed a pump 4 injectors and a good flush of the tank/lines?

thats the problem with main dealers they will replace before they will repair

The parts list is 3 pages long.

At the time, all the options were "wayed up". Dci100 engines are like the car itself, like rocking horse sh*t. I wernt for bodging it with a dci80 engine (different box aswel). So i had to stick with the same engine.

We had a morning phoning round, and soon realised the parts it was having, were expensive where ever you went for them (even 2nd hand), and thats before labour was talked about.

As these wernt 50p parts, we had to makes sure this was being done once. By following Renaults (not the garages) reccomendations, the work is warrantied. The car is also very honest for the next owner too (as ive got my eyes on a white polo bluemotion) and everything is easily backed up and fully documented for future reference.

Also, as mentioned previously, time was hugely important to me, as i needed the car. I dropped the car off at Renault Bolton very late on Thursday evening, and got a phone call early Wednesday afternoon, that it was ready to pick up. An unbelievable turn around considering everything that went on.

I took a path that not many of you guys would of took, but i feel it was the right one. Also my main objective of this thread was to make people aware that even though your car could be out of warranty, if your faced with an unhealthy bill, Renault can and do help. All you need to do is ask...

  LY 182
yeah, they did a good job, and reasonable with the 30% etc etc etc

im just saying something to think about in the futre.

i've come across a fair few problems like this in the past, contaminated diesel is getting more and more a common problem with common rail..

without seeing it i couldnt entirely say but i personally would have first flushed the tank (instead of replace) back flush the fuel lines (instead of replace) working forwards a new diesel filter, recon diesel pump and 4 or was it 3 injectors...

even with an average garages labour you'd have come out under the 1500 odd quid you payed.

but glad its sorted and they didnt mess you about

Do you think the problem was caused by some malfunction of the fuel system/pump or do you think it may have been dodgy diesel??

wow..thats unlucky...you dont seem to that pissed of at the fact your had to cough up £1780, i would be fuming as the car is not even 4 years old!

  Polo + Micra
that seems a little bit steep to me as others have said it seems like they have replaced rather then repair/cleaning out.

also a little off topic

but why a blue motion in white? (there is only one polo to get in white ;))

Renault still made quite a large profit from you dont you worry about that, they will never loose money, them parts only cost them a couple hundred quid. They normally put a 200-300% mark-up on the part and then add the £70 an hour labour. the labour is what cost you the most as they had it for 6 days. They probily added storage aswell as they've gotta pay insurance to keep peoples cars there.

common problem on some earlier ford tdci engines - you have to drain the filter and measure the amount of metal in the fuel before deciding on course of action - still think its over kill changing all the pipes to and from the tank  biggest problem is the high pressure side pipes and injectors clearances are so small any metal and its up s**t creek :dapprove:

I had this exact problem with my 206, after replacing all 4 injectors & the high pressure fuel pump (at about £1200) i limped it to the renault garage and part-ex'd it against my cup lol. Seems that the plastic impalers on the low-pressure fuel pump (in the tank) had fallen apart and swum through the entire fuel system - very common fault on pretty much all modern diesels, its kills everything, so watch out!!

My suggestion, buy a fault code reader, then you can switch off all the warning lights on the dashboard before they evaluate it for trade-in ;)

k9ks are a nightmare when they go wrong and expensive like u have proven.

ive seen the same problem u have had a few times now.

Mug imo, i would rather rent a car and let a renault specialist do it even if it did take a bit longer, would have probably had the car off the road for a week and spend around 1000 max sorting it.

Rather reply to every comment individually, ill try and sum everything up in one.

As a few people who appear to be quite knowledgable on this subject, have commented, any situation where you have fuel pump+bits of metal, in the same sentence, is almost certainly going to mean big money. So whether i took it to renault or not, you are still talking a 4 figure bill. As ive mentioned before, the whole turnaround was hugely impressive of less than a week, including the weekend. This was important as i had a hire car for this period too.

This thread was never intended for advice. Thats not that im arrogant at all. Id just rather not receive negative advice for something that has already happened, and is in the past. The path i took, was ive mentioned, the one that i felt was the correct one. I wanted to bring my recent experience to everyones attention, just to let you know about that renault arnt as bad as everyone makes out. Both renault uk+renault bolton, spent a huge amount of time on the phone informing me+whoever else i wanted, exactly what was happening and why. I just hope that this story may help anyone else who finds themselves in a similar position in future :D

The fact that every part was replaced, rather than cleaned/repaired, was a decision that i made after speaking to renault uk. Doing things the way i did, has meant that there is no comeback if anything related happens again. Its not as if there was a mega difference in parts, as a 2nd hand pump is still big bucks, and id rather not take the risk of that one failing either. All the work, and all that parts that have been fitted, are covered by renault.

For the guy who mentioned about me sounding upbeat, lol. I kinda am. As we all know, these things happen. You just have to deal with these things as they arise. Like on the way home from picking it up on Thursday, for the first time in all my years of driving, a car abliterated my drivers wing mirror. (my girlfriend reckons thats karma, lol) I was annoyed, but got on with it, priced the parts up, and picked them up on Friday. Sh*t happens, as they say.

On the note of the white polo bluemotion, ironically, i had arranged a test drive in it the week before all this happened at my local vw garage. I wasnt impressed by the polo looks wise, until i saw there white demo. Zero tax, 60ish mpg, 3 year warranty+3 years free servicing all make for a rather attractive deal

id just feel like i had been done dry tbh over 3.5k spent just to trade it in, should have cut your losses imo. eBay

Please read all my posts before commenting. The whole point of this thread is that i didnt pay £3.5k for the repairs. If that was the bill, it would be on here for sale as a 2.0 transplant donor car.

ok i didn't read the whole post, but an 05 reg car, i would expect them to be standing 50% of the bill tbh.

oh and the chap who said he hadn't heard about them problem before, must have been telling porkies or it was his first day.

What a load of b****cks. You really haven't got a clue.

Glad you got it all sorted and Renault footed some of the bill - so they should.

Gotta love CS, there's always someone to piss on your fire eh?

  In between cars....
Christ, thats hurrendous, I bet if youd have pushed hard enough RUK would have made a bigger contribution, id be fuming if my 3.5 year old car did that

This is exactly it, the fact it is all genuine Renault parts and work.

I know there are plenty of mechanics/mechanically able people on this forum who could perhaps do the job and they 'are sure' not doing the complete job will work.

But actually you have peace of mind. Good stuff
