The well discussed Steering wheel issue - the way forward?

F&B

So this has been discussed at length - the issue with crumbling thumb grips and melting/peeling 'leather'.

If you are in warranty, you may be lucky, depending on the dealer, and get a replacement. If not, then you would have to shell out £350/£400 for a new one from Renault and about the same on a professional re-trim.

But, what are people planning to do when their's finally falls foul? As far as I can see there are only a couple of additional options beyond the one's above -

1) Buy an aftermarket (Momo etc..), but drop the airbag and potentially end up being asked for extra premium from your insurer.

2) Keep on the look out for secondhand wheels, but be prepared to keep doing this as a secondhand one may be close to degrading and you'll have to find another one.

So, what has everybody decided to do? Momo wheels look great, but what happens if you crash - could you forgive yourself for removing the airbag if you end up losing your teeth on your new Momo?

Removing the airbag if you have harnesses is not a problem, but do harnesses (and suitable seats) carry an additional cost on insurance? Would a CG-lock for the standard belt keep you pinned close enough to the seat to negate the need for harnesses by ensuring you could never get close enough to the wheel to make head-contact in an accident?

What have you all decided to do? (the last option being to just live with an ugly wheel!)

I've been thinking about changing my steering wheel for a nice momo or sparco, but have had second thought even though in crash test videos the dummies face never ever gets near the airbag let alone the steering wheel.

My insurance just puts it as 'interior changes' so my seats, stripping, harnesses etc, are all covered in one old chap.
Was an extra 25 pounds sterling a year :)

I should think id have to declare a rollcage though.

If i changed the steering wheel i would definitely get harnesses at same time stop me hurting my nose.

CG Locks only hold the lap strap tight, so that won't help. Invest in a Momo wheel and some driver training ?
