And annoyingly its my bloody fault

Had been fitting a stalk and display adapter to my ph1 172 today which went fine until it came to putting the head unit back in, tight isnt the word!

Anyway think Ive shorted something but dont know what.

Central locking isnt working, a relay is clicking like mad and the dash is going crazy but only when the car is switched off. Starts and runs ok.

Got a vid uploading but all advice as to what I may have done is more than welcomed.

Thanks
John

bit of a random guess, but i dont reckon its head unit related, i think you have pulled a dash loom earth wire off while pushing the head unit in

mm yeah could see that being a possibilty.

Aye I doubt its hu related as well, other than ive either shorted or cut a wire. Gonna be a b**ch to access to see though :(

100% an earth bet my left spud on it, if you turn headlights on, does everything stop flashing (or slow down)

wipers going mad?

worst case is dash top off and check all the earths that go along the top of the dash below the windscreen

had nightmares with them when i did mine

Well went out this morning and its all working perfectly. Not that happy about it tbh cos whatever caused the problem could cause it again. Finding something thats broken but working is impossible! All the earths I could see looked fine to me.

Oh well, fingers crossed!

Right now Im pissed off.

This same thing happened at FCS just after Id washed the car at the hotel, once again I disconnected the battery and the next morning it was fine again.

Now Ive just finished washing the car again and its done it again!! But this time with the hazards going as well. So Ive put it in my garage as it cant be locked and disconnected the battery again.

WTF is causing this? I guess some kind of short due to water but it doesnt happen every time I wash the car and its been pissing down something chronic recently and been ok :S:S

Getting hard to trust it to work :(

All help and suggestion welcome, even daft ones!!

Fusebox letting water in? HU thing may have been coincidence... Is the grommit where the loom comes into the car split so the loom is rubbing on the bulkhead?

Could even be a dodgy battery....

have you tried removing what you put in before it all started going tits up?

also you said the hu was tight you might have trapped a cable as you put it back in

Redid the head unit on return from FCS, now slides straight in as all the wiring has been moved. Also checked all the wires that we could.

Just checked the engine bay fusebox and its defo damp. I guess water from the hose as come in behind the light and gone into it. Pic coming.

So things to check;
Engine fusebox
Internal Fusebox
Door connections
Dash earth
Loom on bulkhead

to check all the dash earths the whole bottom half of the dash needs unbolting (on a ph2 anyway) as it has earths bolted all the way across the top about 5 in total
