Thinking about a 172...

As some of you know I have a Lupo GTi.

Been through some different stages with it for the last few months, and recently I have really started to love it and was set on keeping it.

BUT....

I keep seeing 172's around and looking on autotrader, I still really want one.
I've found a nice low mileage cup that I really really want.

I love the Lupo, but something is telling me I should have a 172 instead!

Any advice etc?!

I'm just worried about going from a well built awesome little car with lots of toys to something with none.

Pros:

Cheaper to run (Lupo only does 30mpg)
Looks awesome
Quicker
Release some cash from the Lupo
Newer than the Lupo

Cons:

Insurance is more
Tax is more
Won't turn as many heads as the Lupo
Less toys (Although I hardly use the aircon or heated seats)
No xenons, but I could buy some easy enough

I think if I test drive this cup I will want it!

sure they turn heads. when they got a nice set of chavy white stripes down em lol.

i take it you cant afford a 182? cos i'd skip the 172 if you could afford it.

Why not a 182?

I really fancy a cup, but I'd rather get a bit of money out of the Lupo and put in the bank to be honest.

Trust me the Lupo turns a lot of heads, a lot of people have no idea what a Lupo GTi is, and it surprises a lot of cars speed wise.

just buy mine :)

Whats the details for it mate?
You selling up?

So why you posting up pics of lupo's in clio discussion,

I'd keep the lupo TBH.

  vtr, 172, s1 rallye
clio more of an all round better car.

But lupo will hold value much more than the 1*2 will no matter what model.

Id personally keep the lupo if you dont need to free up alot of equity

If you're not ragging the Lupo, and getting 30mpg ok. But be aware that if you drive the 172 normally, you won't get much over 30 average out of a whole tank. To see 40 you'd have to drive like a nun, with no town work. It's all well and good people quoting numbers off their trip computer, after one long journey at a steady 60, and saying they get 40mpg out of theirs. Bear in mind the trip computer over-reads by about 2mpg as well. But as an average over a tank, if you use the power often it'll be 30 at the most... And if you're not gonna use the power very often then don't bother.

Basically what I'm trying to say is don't bank on much over 30mpg - if you drive it like they were designed to be driven, then you're gonna come on here saying "Is my 172 broken, I'm only getting 25mpg out of a tank!". Take all the high figures you read on here with a pinch of salt. If you know anyone with a 172, and they drive anything like you, ask them to show you their trip computer, when it's got over like, half a tank or so on it. I mean, some people do say they always get less than 30mpg out of every tank - they obviously drive them 'properly'.

Im not saying its not possible to get over and above but for a prolonged period you can forget it.

Whys your Lupo only geting 30? Thats shocking for a 1600cc

Can't really judge cc on MPG, for example... my old 106GTi (1587cc) wasnt particularly good for mpg even though it weighed in at just over 950kg's.. purely due to the fact you had to rag it around to make it shift... Perhaps the Lupo lacks torque for a car of its weight / size

LOL at the Lupo being a head turner!

And if that is a reason to keep it instead of upgrading to a Clio, you are a complete ponce!

A 172 will not cost a whole lot more than a GTi to run.

My friend's 172 Cup is doing about 35 mpg. They're amazing cars!

As people have said it all depends on how you drive it.

I drive it fairly lightly until I feel the need for speed and a little adrenaline rush, then boot it for a bit, then just drive nicely again. There's no point racing from red traffic light to red traffic light. I average around 34mpg mostly town driving. Motorways I get into the high 30's sometimes even low 40's depending how far I drive.

As for the Lupo mate, i'd personally keep it, because of the fact they're rarer and hold their value more.

Yes! But it should be far more economical than 30mpg when hes not ragging it. I had a Saxo VTS before the 172 and it would see 34mpg at very worst.

  In between cars....
The polo gti i had before the clio was dismal on fuel, to be holnest the clio isnt much more to run at all, its definately substantially better on fuel, normal driving anyway ;)

Its bigger, feels fairly sold, doesnt have the VAG reliability but then not many do

Then, if you think that, why are you wasting your time replying to him?

The lupos does turn heads.

I get people asking about it quite alot!

Had people follow me to places just to ask me about it!

But it's not as capable as a 172 cup for sure!

Pretty fun car tho imo :D

It's not a waste of time replying with that. He needs to know know this. Do you buy your cars based on how many people are going to look at you? Are you that vane?

Well it is a waste of time really.

I wrote the pros and cons from what i could think off the top of my head, one of them being the Lupo turns heads.
I didnt buy the car for that reason but I like the fact people are interested by the car.

Thanks for the replies, all points make sense. To be honest I don't think I will end up getting one, not anytime soon anyways. Will cost me an extra £500 insurance, which I can't honestly see being worth it.

As for fuel, it is pretty bad, 150 miles from 23.5 litres (5.22 gallons) is around 28mpg! Fairly short journeys through the week, then at the weekend it gets a few decent long drives to get it up to temperature and then gets a bit of a thrashing. Not sure why it is so bad, just a revvy little engine.
There is a decent amount of torque under 3krpm, but it sounds nicer at 6.5krpm!

What I buy cars based on has nothing to do with whether Pepsi should change his Lupo with a 172. I love how you say "He needs to know this" as if you're quoting some facts... He obviously doesn't agree as he thinks it's a head turner.

Maybe you don't care if other people look at your car and think it's cool, which is fine, not everyone cares what other people think. But some people do like it when people look at their car at the lights or whatever, sometimes giving an approving nod or smile etc - and wouldn't want to buy something they thought wouldn't be able to do this.
