At the end of the day if you pull up to the lights in 172 and theres a CTR next to you your not going to say "well I wont take him on because hes in the next class up" are you......The mk1 172 Ive got is with out doubt the best car Ive ever owned its just the 182 isnt going to be a big enough improvment for me to change to.......bet if the new 182 did have 200bhp Reno wouldnt lose out as much ground as it has to the CTR though.Quote: Originally posted by Ben H on 27 January 2004
I disagree.
The Megane RS is intended to take on the next class size up CTR and Focus RS - although the Clio inevitably ends up being compared to these cars.
The real competitors for the 172/182/16V/Williams/GT Turbo in terms of price and size have always been the smaller VTS, 106 GTi, 106 Rallye, 205 GTi etc (although are usually more expensive).

My opinion of the new clio 182 is that it hasnt really moved Renault any further on in the hot hatch market. To compete it needs 200bhp like the CTR and FRS. The extra 10bhp and a few tweaks here and there arent enough for me to justify changing my mk1 for one.
When I first got my 172 it was the hot hatch king now unfortunately I feel Renault are playing catch up.......might be different when the new Clio comes out in a few years time......fingers crossed!!
They wont make a car like the clio (ie 1100kg) with 200 BHP. The power to weight ration would just result in everyone killing themselves. The clio has 165 BHP and is fast. One with 200 BHP would be just stupid and youd go through front tyres like bird flu through Asia.
A ctr and leon arnt a supermini like the clio. They are closer to the Imprezza / megane size than the supermini size. The clio doesnt need more power. These are not drag racing cars but the whole driving experience cars

Erhmm, wrong. a 200bhp/ton 172/cup is perfectly fine. The biggest contributor to my tyre wear is my suspension geometry, not the power. Several people on this site will vouch for that.
Ieal power for a 172/cup is 220-240bhp, could go to 300 with LSD.

I didnt say it wasnt fine. I said they wouldnt make one. And they wont. Few insurance companies would touch a 200 BHP supermini, so no one would buy it.

Now your talking sh*te. Who says 220-240 BHP is ideal. What do you mean by ideal? Ideal for some drag racing maniac that wants to kill themselves and other road users? And a cup and 172 are different cars, they weigh different amounts and have different suspension, so is 220-240 ideal for a cup or ideal for a 172, because it cant be idea for both without contradicting the meaning of ideal. 240 BHP on a cup, while maybe ok in the right hands (ie track day enthusiasts and specialist tuners), is not a car that a munufacturer would touch for a mass market for the simple reason that small minded gimps would get hold of it and lots of poeple would die.
