Throttle position sensor location

  Clio 1.4 Dynamique +
I am having a few issues with starting - occasionally the engine will rev around 2000rpm, but after a few stop/starts it clears itself. The toxic fume light comes on as well.I have read that it may be a throttle position sensor problem. Is this something that can be easily replaced DIY? Can it be removed & cleaned? Also, where do I find it on a 1.4 16v engine? Any pics would help.

What year is the vehicle? If it's a phase 1 it'll be a cable actuated throttle body and the TPS will be bolted to the side. Technically you are not supposed to remove them from the TB assembly as they're factory set but you can get away with it on these models without any real effect to the running ofthe car. If however it is the phase 2 it will be a stepper controlled throttle body meaning it is controlled and moved by a digital motor which also doubles as the position sensor and you cannot change it as it is a non-user servicable assembly.

The reving to 2k sounds like either a pedal, throttle body or wiring issue... diagnostics/live data session will help eliminate the options to the actual fault so would be money well spent but be carefull where you take it to as most garages have diagnostics but don't know how to use the kit and rely heavily upon generic fault codes which isn't a good way to spend your money.

Mick, It is a 51 plate, and from the looks of it, it is not cable operated. It has only really started doing it since the weather turned bad ( had a LOT of rain down my way) , so not sure if this is coincidence or not. As it would seem to be the stepper controlled option, is this an expensive fix?

It depends on what the diagnostic session shows... could be a pedal track at fault or even a wiring issue between the pedal potentiometer and the TB itself.

Step 1 - Proper diagnostics required and go from there buddy.
