Ticking Exhaust

  BMW F21 125d
Ok peeps, after some wisdom.

My exhaust ticks all the time when i turn it off after any length of journey and any sort of driving style. Now on previous cars, if i have been driving hard it would tick as its something to do with the gas particles expanding or something when the exhuast is cooling ? - Please feel free to correct me on this!

But on my 172, it does it all the time, i do mostly short journeys and the engine barely gets warm so its not been driven hard. Other than that it runs fine, no problems with idle or fuel usage etc....

Any Ideas?

Oh and ive used the search facility and most "ticking" enquires have been engine bay related rather than exhaust gases.....

IIRC its the heat shields that actually tick..tho on the 172 it prob wont last much longer anyway (mileage dependant)..

Milegae is low (25k). i understand its the cooling process, but why does it do it under normal driving conditions.... Other cars i've had or mates cars, only do it after a thrashing!

My yozzasport does it WAY more than the standard one did.

My dads zafira does it pretty bad to.

I have just got a 172 cup and mine does this too. Was a bit worried about it at first but it doesn't bother me that much.
Does it do it whilst the car is still running? Mine does once I have stopped moving. I can hear it faintly whilst stopped at traffic lights if I open the window.

My PH1 172 does it all the time. Its just the exhaust/ heat shield cooling down. My GF's copper s does it even if she drives round my house which is a mile from hers and gives hardly anytime for the car to warm up.

The exhaust gets hot, hot metal expands. As it cools it contracts and the ticking you hear is the metal contracting.

Yeah i get that. My astra did it and even my old fiat panda did it cooling down but my cup does it when the car is sitting there ticking over. I suppose it is cooling down in a way though as it isn't under heavy use.

you say its coming from the exhaust? are you 100% sure? it doesn't come from behind the drivers side headlight does it?

He O/P says its after he turns the engine off so that'll be the exhaust.

I'd bet BMark's problem is the carbon canister.

LOL. Funny you should say that. I have done a number of searches today as I have that as well and there were exact descriptions of what noise the carbon canister would make.
My cup does that too but this noise is exactly like an exhaust cooling and contracting but it does it when the engine is still on at the end of a journey once i have stopped. And mid-journey sometimes when I am listening out for it at traffic lights and stuff.
It sounds like it is coming from the middle of the car.

Mine does it , its totally normal, just the metal moving slightly as cools. (Ive got Ktec tho). I dunno if the garage didnt put gasket seal on my exhaust fitting tho, cos my other car doesnt do it and i fitted that after market exhaust myself! (with seal)

Alright guys.
My dad has had a listen to the car and he reckons it is a loose baffle plate that is making the noise on my car. Which is why it was ticking whilst the engine was still on. Then when i turn the engine off obviously the exhaust ticks when cooling down. They sound exactly the same which is why i was getting confused.
