Ticking noise?

The missus just called to say that at the traffic lights on the way to work all the dash lights flashed up and there was a bit of smoke coming out of the bonnet. The smoke seemed to go pretty quickly, and the lights went back to normal but there is now some weird ticking from under the bonnet? This noise is still being made when the car was switched off and parked.
I did an oil change on her last week, but made sure I put the decent stuff in (Fuchs 5w40) if that helps diagnosis?

Anyone have any ideas?

Impossible to say without seeing but I'd check the aux belt run/alternator. Seems to be a common failure at the minute
