I did chuckle at the last sentence and the reasoning behind it.

Some of these guys are so clever. I hope they're getting paid for something worthwhile and using their skills.

This is partly the reason why they do this in the public arena, the individuals that hack & write very advanced viruses etc are often recruited by software firms/military/intelligence agencies on very big pay packs due to their proven skills.

Some (me included) also believe that some of these individuals actually write viruses for the big antiviral companies out there, releasing their own "cure" etc and generally creating a market for themselves. The antiviral market is now worth in excess of $9.4 billion dollars a year!
