Timing belt

Guys, how big a job is it to change the timing belt on a 2002 (02) 172?

What should I get done when having it changed..i.e guides,tensioner etc

5.1 hours labout officially.

You need all the toels if you want to DIY it plus I'd never recomend it unless you know what your doing.

When the belt is chnagedthe tensioners are chnage the aux belt should be chnaged and the aux belt tensioenr chnaged (some places don't chnage the aux belt and it scrital to chnage it IMO and the tensioer). The oil cma seals are chnaged as they are removed to lock the cams.

Cam cover are £12
Cambelt plus tensioenrs are £100ish
Aux belt etc are £60
I think there about the prices from Renault.

Oops yep sorry minds elsewhere I think its £140 from memory if I'm allowed another guess.

I'd personaly get them done ASAP its over 5 years old and over 60k so over due one on milage wise and due one on milage wise.

Gates etc do the cambelt but IMO I'd just use the proper Renault ones prices arn't that much more and least you know your not missing bits some places just sell the belts for £12 you pay 5.1 hour labour at a garage and then the tensioners etc fail as they do and your looking at £1k minimim to fix.

Reno were doing the aux belt, idler and tensioner as a kit for 47 quid with the vat a month ago

I spoke to Renault earlier and they want £740 to do it...........BLOODY HELL!!!!!

I got a price for timing belt kit and aux kit and it is
T Belt and kit £160
Aux belt and kit £125...

I spoke to a mechaninc I know and he said that I can get the parts from a local motor factors..the belts are all manufactured by Gate which are available much much cheaper from a motor factors....I need the full parts list to give them to get me th parts

He said he could then do the work for me with these parts..anyone recomend any advice on this..

The mech I know had a look at his book and it says 6 hours labour and NO special tools needed....

^don't take it to him then!

there's a camshaft locking tool, a crank locking pin, and a pulley locking tool, the tools are about £150

oh, you need to new cam plugs too

edit: as said you DO need the lock tools, this aint no tip-ex job

Just go to your local garage and get it done like I did! My garage got the proper kit from the Renault dealer. You don't have to pay dealer/stealer's hourly rates as it's a job that any mechanic can do and they will either have or can get the tool they need for the job which takes just over the 5 hours. It takes about 1.5 hours to take enough bits off before they can see the place where the belt is!

I remember posting a picture of the front of my car during the job and it looked a disaster but was soon back in one piece again! Trouble is that there is so little space to work in under a 172 bonnet that mechanics aren't keen working on them!

renualt gave me a price of £750, got it done by a reno specialist with renualt parts for £500 inc vat.

bumper has to come of i think.

Looking at a 52 plate 172 now on Sat, 80000, full service history and cam belt done at 72000...........

if the engne out the car its dead quick to do engine outs officaly a 12 hour job though then you've got to decide what to do with air con etc.

Fred is that the right kit though don't forget there is two kits for the car Ok the difference is only the one bolt diameter but still it won't fit with the wrong one.

Getting my 02 172 FF done in Kent. Only done sub 18,000 miles but 5 years old and too scared to risk leaving it. Quotes from £728 to £550 so getting them in writing. Only way ahead is to bite the bullet and get it done. If I ever sell it'll be money well spent I reckon. Anyone know a good dealer in Kent/S London?

the gates kit (you need the kit) is about 120 from motorfactors, a 20 quid i wouldn't even bother saving.
