timing belt

  Renault Clio 1.2
I have just bought a Clio 1.2 "V" reg. It has exceptionally low milegae for the year (34.000) and is in good condition. Is it really necessary to change the timing belt just because it is 9 years old? I have read that it should be changed at 72.000 or at 5 year intervals. I would not have thought that the material it is made from could perish in 5 or even 9 years with that mileage if they are designed to last for 72.000 plus miles. Does anyone know of a belt braking because of its age rather than through excessive mileage?

Thanks for that, I guess its not worth the risk of chancing it. If the valves and pistons got buggered then it would be basically a right off. It wouldnt be worth getting a new engine with the money I paid for the car.

Get it changed asap. My cars timing belt just broke, was 3 years overdue but its only done 64k.

Im looking at £700 to repair the damage :(
