Timing question?

Right my m8's currently fitting a timing belt to my 172 cup but is unsure how to set the inlet camshaft phase shifter.

The cams are locked at the other end using the proper tool but the phase shifter wheel is loose. Do you use the marks on the pulley to set it against the other pulley or is there another way?

Is there some additional tool to set them?

I might have got some of this wrong as he's buggered off on a quick hoilday till tuesday and im not an expert on this type of work.

He's being really careful about doing my car and isnt doing anything untill he fully understands it first. We've read the pdf manual about doing the timing but it doesnt seem to mention to to correctly set this pulley.

I realise im gonna get flamed but need the question anwsering anyway!

did you not mark it before you took the belt off, never done a clio one but whenever i have to mess with any variable cam timing units i just mark each side and put it back where it was

Im pretty sure the cam should be locked tight but cant remember now mate.

The cams are locked in place at the back but the phase shifter pulley is loose. Do you time them up using the marks on the or use the locking tool you use to unbolt the pulleys in the first place?

if the cam are locked the pulleys should be locked to them mate. they shouldnt spin thats my understanding there is no marks on the pulleys from memery.

Hmm. I think the only pulley thats loose (can move left or right) is the phase shifter one. I'll go and have a quick look.

You mean on the inlet cam yea? Its called a dephaser.

Yep thats the one. Just been out to look and its got on the side of the pulley there is a circle with a vertical line through it.

This might be some sort of timing mark? The pulleys havnt been tightened up yet so that might just be the problem. But the cams are locked into place at the battery side of the engine.

Oh dear. they have floating pullies. If you don't know what your doing then good luck!!!! Not fully sure on the in's and out's but they are not like a standard set up...........

Isnt it crap knowing you can't drive around in your car because of stupid things like this. Its starting to get sunny again here and i cant even wash the cup as its stuck in my garage!

It's not me doing it myself but a m8 who's a mechanic and he's buggered off till tues! Im just trying to get as much information as i can for when he comes back. I would ring renault to see what they say but i'll bet it'll be "bring it in to us to look at it for you"

Have you got the tool with the cogs?

I thought you used that if you have loosened a cam pulley.

Just installed a set of cams from K-Tec and redid the timing without any of the locking tools. My mechanic is saying he eyeballed it as best as possible since we didnt have a the locking tool. Drove the car and its all fine but i cant feel a power increase. Is this due to the camshaft not being much different from the original one or is it due to eyeballing the cam timing.

oh dear, eye balling the cam timing! no wonder if feels no faster, if the cam or crank is even a nats bollock off it'll be out

and by not using the tools its going to be way off
