to coil or not to coil?

  ph2 iceburg 172
hi
ive got a ph2 172 and the rear shock has started pissing out oil, so im undecided wether to replace the shock with a standard piece or replace the whole lot with coilovers? i would be looking at very cheap coilover i.e ktr coilovers or the raceland ones off ebay. my main question is, how much harder is the ride on a car with coilovers? ive unfortunately never been in a car with them so dont have much to compare to but the main reason i ask is because most of my friends are not into cars in the slightest and i dont want everyone complaining how hard and uncomfey it is. i wont be doing any track days so it will be purley fast road use.
any help would be great thanks

How about aftermarket springs and shocks? Eibach springs are meant to be good and their progressively wound so shouldnt be too hard.

i thought of that but thought that it would probs work out more expencive. would standard shock ad springs be sufficent?

If it is a road car standard oe stuff will suffuce. Unless you are jean ragnotti i cannot see the point of putting after market suspension on a road car.

Massive handling difference between standard set up and the V-Maxx coilovers that I have. But yes ride is harder, I'm not too fussed about it personally but it is noticeably harder and less comfortable. You can feel the smallest bumps in the road. I think more expensive coilovers are better on comfort, especially those with adjustable damping, but not sure by how much.

i thought about just replacing it with standard shocks, but i like the idea of lowering the car, i ideally would ideally like to go lower than -40mm (which seems to be the roughly drop of springs)

I fitted coilovers to mine, and was questioning whether it was worth it, but can tell you that coilovers are great, they change the look of the car with height adjustable, but also the feel of the car. If you can put up with feeling every bump and avoiding potholes, the go for it. Other than that, buy standard shocks and ebiach spring to lower a little. People rate that set up on cs. Also when buying coilovers, dont go to cheap on them, the 1*2 were made for handling. The ktec coilies sound very good and get very good reviews on here.

Are the ktec coilovers stiff enough for track day use though? Compared to shocks and springs say.

I got new STD shocks for my 182 all round (after about 50k)... and the difference was amasing. They cost about £220 for the lot IIRC.

Shocks are a consumable item, so unless you can get a coily that can be re-built/serviced, I'd personally steer clear.

i was thinking along the same lines, as in the raceland coilovers for my cup, but say on a b road is the handling going to be worse? im not bothered about lowering it etc.
just want to freshen up the suspension, and this would be cheaper than going down the road of new oe shocks and springs
