too much is as bad as not enough. this does depend on how much too much is!

imagine trying to run through water waist high or shoulder high (waist high being normal)

same principles apply, its harder for your engine. depends by how much extra you have in there though

what about the dipstick...

not sure if it is supposed to be full or half on the electronic display thing on the dash...

allways check the dip stick

but im not sure what scale the dash is, it could be a few mm or an inch so will have to have a look at that.

should be just under top mark on dipstick if it's more drain it and do it again... it'll only cost you a sump nut washer if you use the same oil.

Unscrew the filter slightly instead ;)

Oil needs to be at the right level to maintain the correct pressure.

oil level has nothing to do with how much oil pressure your pump is producing obviously if you haver no oil then you will have no oil pressure atall as the engine is starved of it.

Just check you dipstick. Cant imagine anyone would put too much oil in. Also, seems simple but make sure your cars parked on flat ground when your checking it.

And check it once the car has been standing still for 10 minutes/

You'd like to think so... My dad took his car into the garage some time ago and some young lad, who was in training, was told to change the oil and then fill it up with fresh oil... which he did, to the brim!!! What a tool.

You'd be surprised what people DON'T know about cars, a little knowledge is dangerous.. Some people know what oil is, but they don't know where to put it!

We spent three days trying to figure out how the oil had mixed into the water on a horrible little micra, all the water hoses and water ways were blocked with the creamy paste! Radiator was sent away to specialists to see if the oil and water were mixing inside it! We joked around suggesting they put the oil in the water themselves, and after pretty much giving up, we asked them, is there any chance you put oil in the coolant?

And they just said yes, we did that, about a week ago!

And they earnt themselves a £400 bill, just for being complete and utter pillocks!

to likee and the pump caanot flow oil

too much and it goes in the breathers and the nengine burns the oil and the pumps has trouble etc the amount doens't realy show the engine the crank does run round in it but a little extra there woulnd't matter

I had my OIL ----- flashing on the trip yesterday and the SERV light came on - this was about lunchtime and I'd been driving about from early morning.

Got it home, let it cool, dipped it and it wasn't even near the MIN marker
I got some oil and topped up with 1 litre, dipped it and it brought it up to just under the MAX marker

Then last night before I came home from a mates I dipped it again - oil was a fair bit over the max line :S

What the hell is that all about? lol

Lol no it isnt lol! you are stating that at any time there are parts of the engine dipping into the sump (excluding obviously the oil pump) and touching the oil (probably reffering to the crank). THis doesnt happen, the danger is when its filled too much and the oil level rises above the baffles, and STARTS to touch the crank e.t.c.

you should check your oil once every week or 2, its good practice, and for 30sec work could save you from destroying your engine

This.

It takes you a minute to check all the fluids on your car, 2 minutes to check everything including tyre pressures and brake pads (if you've got disks!) and it could potentially save your life (if you run out of pad you'll not stop!) or at least save you some pennies when you've scored the disks, or starved the engine of oil.

Never understood why people can miss this - especially those that clean their cars twice a day or take them to bits to put their 'track' bolt in rollcage and non-FIA-approved seats in.
