Sooo...

Went to Medowhall for some new clothes etc... Came out with 0 clothing and bought this lense instead :S Impluse buy or what...

Got it from jessops with a 10% discount so cost me £180. Its cheaper on the net but I wanted a point of contact in case it fooked up. Much easier.

Anyway, here are a few 'test' images i took with it. The f1.8 is awesome. Much more arty shots wise. Just need to look at the things I can do with it now & improve my photography:

So my first impressions -

The lense is SHARP as fook. Absolutely love the detail you can get with it. Really good for portraits too on a narrow aperture. Bokeh is excellent - as you can see and its EXCELLENT in low light conditions (the above bar the first one was taken in my room with all curtains/doors closed). Lastly its very small so I wont feel a dick carrying my camera about all the time now - its much more compact!

Criticisms - The AF doesn't like close up macro shots, but 90% of the time you use manual focus for that stuff anyway. Overall money well spent I think - Time will tell!

Lastly!

Can you tell me how I achieve shots like this DAN (revels):

IE blow out all of the back ground? Also, how did you achieve this?

Good to hear you like it. Nice pics. It's definitely on my list of things to get at some point.

For the ones taken in the dark, were you holding the camera or was it on a tripod? Part of my reason for wanting this lense is to use indoor during family/friends gatherings and not always using the flash, so need to be able to use a fast enough shutter.

Hand held mate. Iso was on 400 I think. Maybe higher so it allowed me to use much faster shutter speeds.

Just need to improve my photography now!

I want one of these. The the AF. The minimum focus distance (1ft) will be what stops it focussing I'd imagine.

Lego men is just my guitar on a bit of black material, fast shutter speed so you don't light everything up and then a flash to light the subject. It was quite badly done TBH! Lol.

Few more images I have got with the lense. Must say I was dubious at first, but its really good!

Just need to learn how to use it lol. I'm trying not to use PS and get it right straight out the camera. Hard :( - how do you do the White balance on Photoshop?

Imo, don't worry about the attitude of trying to use PS. It's a good attitude to have, and if you can stick with it then good on you, but PS just makes things so much easier when taking photos as you can concentrate on the basics rather than fiddling with the more complicated settings like white balancing etc.

Do you shoot RAW? (And is yours a Nikon or Canon?)
Easiest way to adjust the white balance is to shoot raw, then use the RAW editor in photoshop, then use the white balance tool.

There will be loads of tutorials on the net for this, but it will make photos 10x better!!

Lightroom is another excellent tool for easy post processing. A couple of clicks and you have white balance, exposure and anything else you want sorted. It does not modify the original file either so you can do no harm along the way.

Good lens this, have had mine for a few months now and it's not been off the camera. What camera do you have?

Comes it handy when you are going for nice DOF. It's a great lens, hope you have fun with it. It WILL improve your photography as you need to move about with it instead of just standing the same places and zooming in and out.

Nope, not at all.

35mm is wide-ish. So good for cars and just general day to day shots. Similar to your 50mm but means you get more in instead of taking a few steps back.

Oh right. So it's a fixed lens, No zoom? I want another lens at some point, I'm off to the states soon and i've only got Kit and 50mm...Do you reckon this would be a good lens to get?!

(Sorry for hijak)

I'd say it is too similar to the 50mm Ali IMO. I only got this as the nifty costs about 350 pounds for my camera
