Took the wheels off...

  172 Cup
Took the wheels off the other day and decided to give them a good cleaning. Sorry didn't think to take a 'before' shot, but just picture the wheel covered in brake dust.. It was a brown wheel basically. :)

To this...

what did u use? i did mine saturday but cudnt get the insides 100% clean, i was using Wonder Wheels but didnt want to get too scrubby with it cuz its quite strong stuff.

I washed them with car shampoo to begin with then used.. wait for it.. white spirit on a rag and it brings the crap off quite easily.

Before anyone says it I know this is probably far too harsh for alloys but I did this on my old set on my last car and it worked wonders. I fully washed off the spirit with another load of soapy water afterwards.

Did have a bloody headache after tho, fumes killed me. I love white spirit, magic stuff. :)

I wouldn't say it was COMPLETELY pointless.. the last set I did this on hadn't been done for ages and there were some marks that I couldn't shift because they had been left too long.. At least doing this even once means it won't come to that, so it is possible to restore them to like new condition at any time.

It didn't take long to do, maybe just over an hour to do all 4. No big deal.

lol, I know, I know.. I would only use it once to get them like that. Not like I do it all the time.

if you polish them after cleaning, the brake dust won't stick as bad

yup polist to get the stuck on crap off then use a wax or better still sealant on them means the brake dust is more likely to rinse off than require alot of scrubbing/strong chemical cleaners to remove.

They look good now. Ill be doing mine soon!
I use Auto Glym clean wheels first of all and use an Ikea kitchen sink brush. I also polish them with super resin polish and then use alloy wheal seal after. Cleaning them regular will make it easier to keep thme clean.

Thought I was the only one who went to these lengths after the 'pointless' remarks.. Hmm.. Interesting.

To give you some idea, the car is a 53 plate and I don't think they have ever even seen a soapy sponge behind the spokes until I got my hands on them. So they were pretty damn dirty and marked.

White spirit deffinitely does shift a lot of crap. Just use some elbow grease and wear a mask preferrably. I felt ill after.

I just used wheel cleaner then allowed some fairy power spray to soak for a good 10 mins and a good scrubbing the wheels have come up good as new too... Nice coat of wax applied so i dont have to do it again too soon

White Spirit tho????

On my five spokes the last owner never cleaned the inside i dont think, and never have been able to get them proper clean so white spirit might have to be an option. But had my turinis from new, since 2003 and when they are on my car i clean the insides as much as i do on the outside cos u can see the inside so much as rather big spaces through the spokes. For this i use Wonder wheels. Av used most of the products on halfords shelves and this seems to be the best stuff. If you do them say once every month then you keep them looking like new! I will shut up now! :rasp:
