Track day ex-cup racer questions

  Clio 172 Cup
I've got a R27 at the moment as a 2nd car, fun/weekends/track days etc. It's the first time I've run 2nd car and I'm wondering if I've got the balance wrong (seat height not helping, see other thread!).

I wonder if I should have looked at something a bit more focused for track work and either gone for a good low milage 172 Cup or 182 Cup/Trophy or even purely a track day special and an ex-cup racer.

At the moment I can see some real appeal with an ex-cup racer, I did look into getting one about a year ago, did a little bit of research although at that point it was to replace my autograss car and be purely a toy. I want to keep my race car so it would mean the cup racer would live outside (grass car in the garage, no windows and too expensive to leave outside), not ideal I know but a couple of questions for those that know about the cup racers and it's mainly security.

Do they retain door/boot and bonnet locks, if no could I retro fit or are they lightened/modified too much. Any other thoughts on the practicality of storing one outside, not ideal I know and maybe I should go down the route of a 172/182 Cup and really track focus one of those... :S

Cheers.

Personally id go the 172 route, its cheaper and you can find a setup you enjoy.

Cup racers arent second cars by any means.
They retain nothing of any use.

Oh and it had pins on the boot lid i think, maybe you could padlock them? haha

mmm, probably not the most sensible idea I've had, but those pic's and write up (www.playtoymotorsport.com/race.html) make me want one even more - looks like it might have door locks at least...

And yep padlocks would work, done it before on the race car although usually only when leaving it in the pits at a meeting not all day/night outside the house.

you can just use aerocath pins which have a key/lock on them go to demon tweeks and search for aerocatch

Cheers Batman, got the DT catalogue in from of me now... yes I see them, crikey I was thinking I'd have more reasons than not to do this but perhaps it's going to be possible, those locking aerocatches will do the job nicely.

You could just get all the locks etc form a normal car and fit them its not a big problem I'd be tempted if you do get one to get it covered up or in a garage and get it road legal anwyay else get a 172 Cup etc.

Has anyone made one road legal? Sounds interesting... but I think I've come to the conclusion that a cup racer is not right for me at the moment, one day for sure. Just need to consider what is right for me, I either spend a little extra and look at a new R26 or a 2nd hand Evo/Scooby (but have to stomach the insurance and servicing costs) or go track-focused with a 172 Cup or 182 Cup and strip out and do a proper job on one of those... decisions decisions.

I can highly recommend the ex-Cup cars, they are blisteringly fast (in the right hands - but not mine) and wipes the floor with my old scoob over a lap.

However, they need a little more attention than a road car maintenance wise, and some of the renaultsport parts are much more expensive than the road car equivalents.

Happy to take you for a spin in mine if you want. Drop me a PM and I can let you know the trackdays I am planning this year.

Do they need SVA testing, that can be hard work from what I've read in kit car magazines etc. Or can they aquire a standard Clio identity? Still not sure I'd want to do it, but it might nice to consider...

there are a few track ready clios for sale at the moment, there is a silver 172 in the for sale secion on here, a racing blue 182 in belfast, yozza's 1.2 clio cup.

I looked into an ex 182 race car but the running costs pushed me to get a clio 182.

Yep need SVA realy for simplicity its not difficult to do realy the car is mostly covered for the things it needs.
