Track puma...

  Z4
I'm currently in the position where I could buy a 1.7 puma very cheap and I'm tempted to purely to track it.

Are there any popular engine conversions that anyone knows of?

I think it would make an excellent track car, they're light and handle great as standard, lots of potential.

the only thing id consider worth doing would be a MK1 RS lump. Puma engines are all alloy so quite light. Most sengine swaps would increase weight

Tbh id leave the lump and concentrate on stripping it and improving suspesnion

  182 Cup
I think I saw one down to something like 750kg, although it had been built from a spare shell. If you can get it down to anything near that you wouldn't need to worry about and engine swap.

That said, Mk1 Focus RS engine has been done.

Edit - Well said Burp!

I did consider the rs engine but imagine they fetch a pretty penny...

I would leave the standard engine as they're not bad at all, but it's done over 100k so I can't see it having much life left in it tbh

Yep mk1 FRS engine. puma build do a fair few conversions etc, some don't like them though.

Strip it, sort then suspension, brakes etc, then if the engine gives up sort out a conversion then.

that sounds like a good option in that case, what sort of money are we talking for the conversion? I know the frs engine is good for 350bhp once modified which is mental, anywhere around 200bhp would be more than enough...

A remapped frs engine hits around 260bhp, if the car could be stripped down to even 800kgs you're talking a reliable 330bhp/ton!!

For starters strip it...

If you have plenty of till then go for the mk1 frs conversion...

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
one of my techs bought an MK1 RS engine and put it in a fiesta ST, Briefly. I think it set him back £1600 at staff discount (we work for a ford dealers) for just the engine. but, he took it out and sold it and put an ST engine back in it and then sold the car to start his own recovery business.
thats an idea, how about a fiesta ST engine? you can get them upto 185-190 or more.

the FRP is the same engine only tweaked, and it's really not that quick. Lovely car, superb roud the twisties, but lacks on the straights.

I think I'm getting ahead of myself tbh, in reality I'm not going to spend £2000 on a frs engine then spend another couple plumbing the bugger in...
I think as a few people have said, keep the engine it has (the 1.7 is a fun revvy little thing anyway) and strip loads of weight.

ALTHOUGH! There's a spanner that's just been thrown in the works...
My step mother has just got herself a new car and will be getting rid of the old barge very cheap. MG zs 180 saloon. It's done over a 100k again, but it is a 6 cylinder and I know the quad cam has been recently changed.

Thinking about it, this would be a good idea. They're reasonably light, good engine with tuning possibilities of 200bhp with only minor induction mods, v6, and they have an awesome chassis.

Thoughts?

ZS is supposed to handle well, nice chassis.

I've just got a little bit of info off a zs forum, apparently there is a fair amount of weight that can be lost too. 1000kg can be done fine, bearing in mind 200bhp is achievable with very minor induction mods I think I've got a winner...

The MG has been in the family since new pretty much, and the puma has been owned by the gf's mum from new. The zs is in better nick.

I had a base 1.7 puma engine in my old ZS, I managed to painfully find a geniune FRP inlet manifold and ECU then bought a set of cams made up to the FRP profile and fitted a stainless 4-2-1 manifold, I loved it!! That engine with a 4-2-1 pops and crackles on over run like nothing ive ever heard, its totally awesome, just let off over 3k and it goes crazy. :)

Here it is looking abit Orange after scanning in the Performance Ford it was featured in! :)

"FPR" inlet lol. Go go proof reading :)

Very capable chassis, it's been run in BTCC for a good few years. I like the ZS, very much so. I liked the one who AAautosport built with a T16 turbo lump in it, very nice.

ZS sounds a good bet if it's been in the family from new. i'd quite like one

there's a guy who sprints a turbocharged Puma locally and, in class, it's untouchable. it's 1676cc - is that the 1700 Puma's capacity? don't know what he's done to it

Another possibility now is a saxo vts! Does anyone know how light they can be stripped etc? And are there any cheap power gains? Ta!

Never going to as much fun as a puma! It belongs in the corners and you'll get much more out of it.

You'll be surprised what a small engined puma can keep up with through the corners.

Do what Greeny done and strip it to bits.

Or cossie power?

Fair few bob thrown at that Greeny?! Looks great mate.

  Turbos.
Nothing wrong with the Saxo really, and being lighter it will be both quicker and lighter on consumables.

I wouldn't waste money on engine conversions. Trackdays aren't a race, and besides, there will always be something faster.

Strip it, cam and throttle body it, should see around 170ish bhp mark, but itll cost around £2k though.

Couldn't put it better myself.

get a ford racing puma engine, 170bhp!

I thought they were 155bhp

Ian you are correct. Ford quoted 155BHP iirc, but I've never seen one make that on rollers. Last one I saw made 135BHP :dapprove:

Nothing wrong with the normal lump if you loose some weight.
If it goes pop I'm sure there is plenty of scope for the 2.0 & they are ten a penny due to being used in some many applications.

I'm not going down the engine conversion route, it would be great, but it's too much hassle/money.. I want something quick out of the box that's pure fun.

Shortlist is: Mg zs180, saxo vts and phase 1 172. I'd love the clio but they're a little more dear than I'm really looking to spend, then again you never know at the auctions.

106 rallye, awesome all-rounder!

and space monkey and ian you are correct lol! i always thort they were 170bhp! must of been thinking of the st170 engine:eek:

Chassis is awesome, but if you want any real power conversion to a T series is the only way to go. And 200bhp with induction mods? Doubtfull. 193-195 with induction/manifolds/remap. Past that its cams and at best you'll only get up to 215. Shed loads of torque tho... Superchargers are proven unreliable as well. Nitrous tho would be very viable.

But as said, T series - skys the limit. Gief 550bhp TYVM.

If you are looking at the MG ZS maybe you should like a the Honda Civic MB6 VTi-S...essentially the same car but available with 15" speedlines, slightly detuned Integra Type R engine (just shy of 180bhp), LSD gear box and a few other bits and bobs...they are cheap and once stripped out would be reasonably light.

Some track tyres for the 15's would be cheap, fit an shorter ratio Integra gear box and a set of coilovers (available for other civics) and you are onto a winner. Plenty of parts/tuning parts for the B series engines.

Dan?

^ I think it is yeah. I've seen quite a few Puma's with wider (than that) arches on them though, no idea what kit that is though.

I think it's just the FRP replica kit, a few puma companies do them, all the rally ones and track ones seem to have them.

Think there is an s1600 kit aswell.

This one makes me wet...

They look wider than the frp's.
