Tracking question

  ValverInBits
I've got a bit of a problem with my 172 that has been bothering me for ages now.

When I bought it the steering wheel wasnt straight (when the wheels are). It wasnt a mint car by any means and the amount I paid for it, i was happy just to get new tyres on it and get it tracked properly then.

I found that this problem couldnt be sorted using the track rod end adjustment as they ran out of travel by the time the wheel was straight and the tracking was too.
You cant just move the steering wheel round a spline becuase it's fixed in one place.

I'm playing with the pinch bolt connection as I write this, trying to find a splined adjustment there but no luck as yet.

Anyone help me get my steering straight?

Are you sure nothings bent?

And also are you sure the steering wheel will only go on in one position???

yes I have removed the steering wheel and put it back on, it'll only go on one way round.

Nothing looks bent at all.

don't spose there is a chance some muppet could have fitted the wrong track rod ends onto it is there? Thats all I can think of

hmm wouldnt have thought so, but couldnt say for sure.
Wrong steering control rods possibly??

how far out is it?

  ValverInBits
It's not very far at all.
With the wheels tracked correctly and travel left in the rod ends both ways - the steering wheel is about 10 degrees off i'd say
there just isnt enough travel in the rod ends to bring it straight, hence me looking for a spline somewhere.

the only thing I can think of is that it may have had a bump and jumped a tooth in the rack? in which case a new rack might solve it.

  2005 Nissan Navara
i doubt it very much, i think it would bust the rack first.

an easy way to check though would be to see if it gives the same travel when turning left and right.

why will the steering wheel only go on one way??

  ValverInBits
as you know the wheel and column are both splined so the slot together and then they are secured with a bolt.

on the 1*2 one of the splines is a bigun (about twice the size of the others) so the wheel only fits on one way. FARKING daft design

i have the same problem with my 182 when the car drives straight the wheel is slightly over to the right, its annoying

sorry pal, just realised you were on about a 172.

do any of the parts look new-ish..i.e wrong ones maybe used.

i have this only since i bumped a curb, mechanic said it might have jumped a tooth but everyone on here said rubbish but i have NOTHING bent so go get camber and tracking done proper once front coilies are on

you may find you can't get enough travel out of the track rod ends like me. It's proper GHEY

really? I took mine off the other day and tired to put it on at a different angle but couldn't due to the big spline. Are all 1*2 columns the same.
Thanks for you help mate. I may have another look at it in a min

i have only done non sports mate mines got an electric column and that dosn't have a master spline.. did a pas ph1 recently (changed a steering wheel) and neither did that as i forgot to mark where it was and it was pissed lol.

i'd be surprised if sport columns do have a master spline as the rack end isn't adjustable.. it needs more adjustment at the factory than just the rod ends

exactly what I thought. I will have another look to make sure I'm not going mad, but I defintely remember a master spline.
