ive got a 58 plate clio and have had nothing but trouble with it since the day i bought it, the power steering failed on the motorway causing renault to pay 6500 to fix then there was a rotary switch, sub frame taken off and put back together, rear bumper off line with car, wheels, pads, discs and suspension removed put back on and road tested and faults on steering coloumn found and fixed, then brakes squeekin and grinding and problems still with steering that reanult wont do till the lights come on dash, then rental cars they gave me 1 had been in a front end smash the morning i was going to pick it up n the second was filthy and full of dead flys in the passenger footwell and sunroof guard i was charged 105 pound for the rental of the crashed 1 and never got cash back.

advice needed on were use think i stand, trading standards got me to do a letter to finance company but dont know what could happen any advice appreciated

I don't know the ins and outs of it but you might be able to hand it back as a lemon, unfit for purpose - not sure if this is common in the UK though.

trading standards reckon it will go back as a safety issue and what you said that its not fit for purpose but she wasn't that helpful when i asked questions

you might need a lawyer to draft a letter for when you hand the keys back - speak to CAB - finance company own it so you'll have to speak to them first

I have heard of someone that used the "unfit for purpose" act to had it back.

iirc you have 6 months to hand the car back in with a full refund if the car isnt up to a useable/safe standard, a friend of my old boys ran a Peugeot garage for 20 years (mainstream dealer) And a doctor came in and bought 2 206 cc's for his daughters, long story short the sunrooms were leaking after only 2 months and he gave them 5 attempts at fixing the problem and to no avail they were still leaking.

So he handed them both back, one had 4k on it and the other 3k. With all the documents and son on, along with a lawyers letter to explain legal proceddings would go ahead so long as they didnt comply, he got every penny back off them in the end.

Those cars were less than 6 months old and this was about 5-6 years ago, you might have a case here matey!

sounds fair enough to me for a new car, 2nd hand you wouldn't have a leg to stand on really.

so far had letter of rci saying that there not willing to do anything, so i phoned them and they passed blame onto renault uk where theres a manager dealing with the case so phones up and gets the manager he blames wait for it you guessed it rci so im in a no win situation at the min, they also tried to make out that the car has only been in once bull...., then tries to make out power steering aint a safety issue and all old cars never came with power steering its not old its 5 months old

If you look online at the Citizen's Advice Bureau website they have lots of useful information, the Sale Of Goods Act is what would cover you here. It clearly states that a retailer must sell you something that is 'fit for purpose', this clearly sounds as though it isn't. It also gives you advice on what to do, who to contact etc. If you sound like you know what you are talking about then the garage will take you far more seriously than if you are un-prepared and just try appealing to their better nature.
