it's usually 7mm+ for ordinary car road tyres

Depends on the tyre.

7-8mm usually, down to about 4mm on the Pilot Cup Sports or whatever they are on the M3 CSLs and Porsche 911s.

Mine are only 7mm. I got them new the other day and they haven't been fitted to the car yet. The ones currently on my car are less than 3mm though, hence why I brought these. Kinda had to.
