trip computer - mind of it's own

I have the most random trip computer, i can reset it when i fill up with petrol and the next time i fill up the trip miles might say something random like 23 miles even though i've done many more.

Or sometimes if will just keep resetting to 0.

Any ideas? Battery maybe?

When mine kept reseting back to 0, I changed the battery and it fixed it.
