Turbo Conversion Reliability?

Yeah they were fitted to mine and still came loose, it's now tack welded on, very crude but does the job

Where is it booked in at? And what power level etc you going fkr?
It's booked to have the 230bhp kit from engine dynamics on the 12th. Because it's low boost i'm hoping it's still reliable enough to drive as a daily to work which is only a 10 mile round trip.
I only say 'hoping' because I was fairly certain it would be until I read this thread. lol.

Good choice mate, they have been doing them years so they have probably ironed all the niggles out.

has anyone tried those washers that interlock together? Forgotten what they are called now

The downpipe bolts on the volvo are notorious for loosening.

When I changed the exhaust I changed them for Stage 8 locking bolts. They have feet which go up against the downpipe and are then locked with a circlip.

Those f*****s ain't ever coming off. Highly recommend.

Lol @chip. I remember that conrod all too vividly. Although I will admit it still went well even though the rod had a chicane in it.

Imo the idea of a turbo conversion is very appealing, 3k buys very good power the reality is that most have lots of issues ! Which end up costing even more ! Recently on here a few have posted up about the problems that come with it, but I suspect a lot more have had constant problems and ongoing repairs but are too embarrassed to admit to it on here after ploughing all that cash into it !
Strange how many go back to std after having it done or sell up .

I have thought many times about getting mine done but just not worth the risk and expense imo.
 
No problems with my engine dynamics low boost.

@Christ Almighty if your dipstick keeps blowing out then you have boost entering your bottom end, this is something you should be looking in to asap.

As much as I'd love a Clio turbo, I'd always be shitting myself thinking something was going to go wrong, I think you have to be very mechanical to own one, and know your way around a car, so you can fix the majority of the problems, me I am not, that's why I bought an r26. Safer bet I'd say, less fun, yes! Cheaper and less of a ball ache yes!
 
No it isn't sold, i dropped the price in desperation to get hold of a car my friend was selling, but it sold before i sold mine and haven't pushed the sale of mine at all because of that. if your friend wants it get him to message me, its still available, at the moment it just sits on the drive!

As said youl be fine id imagine with low boost as I think it's only 0.4-0.5bar and minimum torque

£680 to insure the R26, has to go in the garage, wife can't drive it to work.

£360 for the Clio Turbo, can live on the road and wife can drive it to work.

That's madness, have you rang around? I paid around £450 on my Clio cup worth 2k, now pay £550 on my 300bhp r26 worth 7k

That is second quote, guessing I've missed out on the R26 as was meant to pick it up tomorrow so starting to give up - both have blamed my postcode - a cul de sac in a tiny village where there is no car crime

I'm with Chris knott, brentacre are worth a try also, I'd try a lot more than 2 mate, aviva used to be very good on my Clio, also try highway, Liverpool Victoria and Keith Michaels, well worth wasting an hour or so on the phone, could save you hundreds, if you do, leave chris knott till last and give them your best quote. ( you'll need a reference number for the quote though, so you can't go making one up,as they'll check ) have you done an insurance comparison check like go compare etc, might be worth it as a base price, then ring round haggling.
 
Speaking from experience the main thing that went wrong on mine was the original Clio loom had to be replaced as there was a wiring fault and that was only picked up after wiring in the standalone, other than that it wasn't too bad, I had to adjust the oil return a few times to get it right and replace the boost clamps for higher quality than I originally bought, built by myself buying parts over a few months and then spent a weekend putting it together. If you have the money and time do it yourself but make sure you research into things like exhaust lock nuts on the turbo and manifold and electronic boost control with a Mac valve. If I could give any advice it would be not to run a helix paddle clutch if you intend the car to be daily driven, mine made a horrible noise and wasn't to fun on the left leg in traffic

@bill in the daily tomorrow for a few hours so may try some others. I don't need two cars though which is why the Megane isn't the answer but probably makes life more difficult when I'd have 3 cars which are very good at what they do, but only two days to drive them.

@Korky would love to build it myself, but not got the knowledge of what to buy, I haven't got a clue where bits would go or what to buy, if there was a "how to fit a turbo" guide I could probably do it but sadly it's a job for Andy or ED

It doesn't do the mileage to justify the extra cost, the specialists are both doing low boost for £2.6k now. Car won't get used now until Feb, then it's out once every few weeks and 6 or 7 track days a year.

When the 'charger kit came up in for sale I was tempted but I spoke to @Dan@SJM and with fitting & mapping, I'm way above low boost cost.

I was all set for bodies & cams but the final cost ends up so close to turbo that I sold the cams.

Fair comment, so I presume your cars all sorted bar the extra power you want?

Yes, power is the final mod, perhaps cage & buckets to follow but the wife doesn't like them - she hated our last caged car.

Got Quaife and new clutch going in atm, fully refreshed suspension, solid engine mounts, 888s and decent brakes.

Fair enough, I understand why you want to keep ploughing money into your existing car, sounds nice! Did you say this isn't your daily? If so go for it I say, that r26 is bloody cheap lol

It's just a toy, I work in London and go by train. We've a proper family car but both are fitted out for family duty with kid Recaro's, so the Clio sometimes gets used but the wife prefers the comfort of the Octavia, tbh munching miles I'd rather be in the Octi.
I decided I could keep the Clio as a track car and buy that R26 as a road toy but the cost of insurance is making me think otherwise, I know it's not that expensive in the grand scheme of what people are paying but it's a lot more than I pay for the other two. I also know I couldn't take the R26 on track as a smash would be a lot more costly, hence me sticking with the Clio for that, and hopefully recovering most of the outlay or reshelling it.
Between MOTs to July I covered 1722 miles, we've used it a lot more this year so I guess this may have doubled. So adding a third car isn't the answer, making the Clio quicker feels like the right answer but perhaps it's not.
Perhaps the answer is the R26 and being more careful on track, but then perhaps I'd hate it and spend the time being too concerned about damage to go for it.

My current long term thinking is the Clio stays with us, we have it turbod and when the Octavia lease ends in 2017 and our kids are older and not needing buggys and that, we can get something quicker as a day to day car so the choice isn't hot hatch v estate car.

Mine has a high boost conversion. Uprated mounts across the board. I use it as a daily and have done a day at a track. Its been fine. Fuel is down obviously and I am more inclined to run a fluid change sooner.

I left the cat on. Uprated clutch. Variable boost. Around 300bhp

Only other mods are eibachs, solid top mounts, ferodo pads and Turinis

Only issues have been air cons not blowing cold and I hate ferodos, both not directly linked to boosting. And it would be great if they could patch the ECU to no turn the EML on but thats pickyness. Cruise, locks, auto lights/wiper still works, aircon did work afterwards.

Im not impressed with the powdercoating on the pipework but that's the powdercoaters fault and is a cosmetic thing.

My aircon didn't work either, I noticed the top pipe hadn't been reconnected after the build so im not sure if they have to disconnect the aircon while doing the build. Obviously if they do, the gas will leak out anyway?
