Turbo Conversion Reliability?

Fitting the bits for the low boost conversion is real easy it's only bolting bits on. Couple of fiddly bits but nothing hard. I think it could easily be done in a few days if you have all the parts ready to go. I guess the worst part is removing the sump for when you drill the block for the oil return.

I thought it would a lot more difficult than that I suppose I could have the sump drilled at a workshop,
Would the car run on normal map while I drove it to get mapped or would it need towed,
Would low pressure need heat shield installed ?

My zvh was done with parts I slowly sourced over about a year and my brother who sadly passed built it for me, I should of left it as is but got someone else to work on it and they fucked it luckly they bought it off me but I reckon this time I will have a pro do it, I learned to do most work myself but think turbo\charger is well beyond my skill level.
Maybe someone on here might put a kit up for sale.

Won't be getting done till summer anyway she in the process of booking summer hols so if its going it will be while I'm on hols and have a date set

You would've been better off getting it built by Ian Howell of fiesta frenzy/area six fame. His engines were strong and more importantly, reliable. I know as he's a very good friend of mine.

It was a g plate mot failure I bought for £90 with a broke clutched i reckon it owed me over 10 grand in the end.
Was stripped to a shell and resprayed nearly every part of running gear was replaced really loved the wee thing.
Only mk3 I ever seen with 18s I even got a rear light from Germany so they matched.

if i run the 172 engine then im only looking to go with the low boost set up, as medium boost seems to be unreliable, but im also thinking low boost will not be enough, so also looking into the 225 route, then it would only need a map to take it to 260 or so and should be a lot more reliable, only issue i am seeing so far is finding a decent car to strip for reasonable money and someone to do the wiring, although it might not be as hard people say, will need to look into it more tbh

Thought the medium boost stage 2 set up was all 225 Meg anyway so why is it said to be unreliable?

I took the sump off and drilled the flat on the back of the block just copied what others had put in project threads ect. Was very easy to do the whole job I think if you get a base map on the new ecu it should run well enough to get it to where ever it needs to for a proper map.

I believe you can buy the oil feed and drain from ClioTurbo for about £110? Don't know if that would help

I'm tempted to use a specialist but I'm also interested in doing it myself

yeah that's what I want to do with mine, just the little things like that its much easier to get the bits made to fit straight out of the box, you going low boost with yours?

I've got a spare fitting that screws into the block once drilled and tapped but the feed I got with the turbo. Had to change a few of the fittings but had spares from old cars ect. If you know the sizes ect you can order all the parts seperately from places like think automotive .

Just get some of the weld on AN fittings mate. Makes a far neater job and reduces the risk of leaks. AN -6 or -8 would be ideal.

His red fiesta was legendary back in the day was so close to getting to my fiesta rst converted by him:up:

Yeah the focus was as well. Shame he sacked the duratec build off tbh, but the block just wasn't standing up to the hp and they kept cracking.
Yeah he's definitely that mate!

The only problem with specialists is the time that they take to deliver the parts . I was told 2 weeks for a boost pipe kit and waited 4 months. Told every so often they had been sent. I think 4 times they got lost in the post and then sent to the wrong address. In the end I said if my card company could not reclaim my money back for me due to time I'd be driving their to remove from one of the cars in the workshop. They came thru a few days later.

Careful with regards to hoses, oil feeds and drains off eBay etc, in the past the Renault 5 boys have had poor quality stuff being sold, some where the pipe was actually a restrictions or had a restriction in the fittings causing poor flow through the turbos... Even a specialist tends to buy off the shelf and might just send what fits from a different supplier unless stated.

Doesn't purtek or whatever make pipes to order and chuck together a suitable set up on the spot? Either way, when I was last in need of lines/fittings I went down the local industrial supplier and got stuff rated for moon landings..

Thought I'd read this and add my 2 pence worth!
I've got a high boost turbo conversion on my cup, Gt2871r turbo and running about 350bhp at the hubs.

Mike Woodford rebuilt the car after i made the mistake of taking it to 519, who completely trashed it and left it half built. Mike did an epic job of fixing 519's fkups. It's running a Gen90 with boost solenoid and I managed to get Will Pedley to map it. Gearbox is standard JC5 with 4 paddle.

I've done about 3000 miles now and 2 trackdays and it is still spot on. Release bearing is making some dodgy noises but other than that seems ok!

Initial issues i found were, grip...I have none, for high boost a diff is really needed, pointless without IMO. Also a swirl pot is also needed as around Brands I was getting fuel surge big time!
The gen 90 isn't the best, it took Will forever to get the boost solenoid to work as apparently alot of the setting on the gen90 that should be open were not! It also doesnt seem to hold voltage well either.

Minor issues I've had that caused overheating have been unrelated to the conversion (fan relay being duff) and CTS sensor needing to be replaced.

Depends which specialist you use, ive had similar problems with one of the main suppliers.

I can if it's bone dry and tyres are good. If it's slightly damp no chance! Lit the wheels in 5th when it was raining at the weekend just trying to overtake on the motorway from 70!
