turbo'ing a 1.2, isit possible?

J03

hmm i was just wondering if its possible to turbo a mk2 1.2 engine like the new mk3s? if so how much would this cost?
i cant quite afford the expeneses of a 172/182 and just want more power. any opinions? cheers joe

Theres a Volvo engine that fits. R5 GTT engine or the VW Turbo one.

Depends how handy you are with a spanner.

i dont want to go all out on a conversion tbh.. and insurance will probably rape me.. plus its a renault so am not too kean on major changes if yano what i mean.. the things french so il probz spend more time and money fixing the thing than driving it

  Clio 182.
Whats the point? Just buy a faster car.

Insurance will rape you for turbo'ing a car thats already a popular choice with young idiot drivers. By the time you've got it sorted you could have bought a proper little fast road car. 172 Cup.

youre looking at least 3k tbh to make your car not as fast as a bog standard 172.

pointless imo

 3k!!! jesus, sod that then... argh am nearly 18 am bored of my 1.2... i want to buy a 182 but i dont want to spend all my money on the car and paying insurance... plus am of to uni so i guess its pretty pointless really :( in 3 years time i dont think i wud wnat a 182 or a clio anymore..

Prob better off with simple things like filter, exhaust etc

You could always try a decat, chip n remap...

I'd just wait or trade it for a 1.4/1.6

btw I've owned Clio's for over 5 years and never had anything go wrong lol :)

Why not just buy a 1.6?

i was going to get one for my first car.. but my dad changed his mind.. they car was black had 30k on the clock and was 4k... same specs and price as my 1.2... was well pissed off

yeah was thinking about the Decat and remap.. my uncle say its pointless on a 1.2 though.. argh why didnt i just get the 1.6 in the first place :(

just keep you money and buy summit quicker in a couple years
btw ave owned me 172 for about 4 month and its spent 1 month of that back at renault

there's always more than one way to skin a cat. You could do a turbo conversion pretty cheaply if you have the skills to adapt and dont really mind what it looks like to a certain extent prob £500-1000 budget. You could do a very nice, well engineered conversion for more money, and if you really wanted to go to town on it (you'd need to if you wanted to run more than minimal boost) an engine rebuild with lower compression pistons etc could cost thousands, but opening up the engine presents you with many options again

sounds interesting.. explain?

ptsschhh.....big dump valve

just avoid asking people on this forum to do work on your engine (apart from the proffessional chaps floating about)...

as they seem to have a knack of screwing people over...in fact just stay out of the for sale section...dangerous

If you really wanted to do it its prob easiest to drop a new engine in there but you'll be throwing alot of money into it either way. Spending a grand or three to get a 1.2 engine to about 130bhp isnt really worth it when you can just stick a bigger engine in or even get a bigger engined car, which saves hassle with insurance

  RenaultSport 172.
think that budget is in fairyland ^^

put it this way..dependant on the boost your intending to run your going to need to forge your internals...

think realistically you could work to a 3k budget.

couldnt see much point tbh tho...just drop a different bigger engine in.

  RS 172
Costs wouldnt end at the engine either. You'd need to lay out on some bigger brakes to stop the thing :D.

I never get why people ask this question. Costly, no real gains for more unreliability... just a pointless waste of effort and time.

Yes, it would be different and individual, but it wouldn't be anything special.

Thing that makes me laugh is when people are shocked at the price of turbo conversions... if it was that cheap it would be much more common- stands to reason really.

we turbod a 1.4 8v saxo for a couple of hundred quid!, its cheap if your handy with a spanner!

i was going to do my old 1.2 16v for a laugh but never have the time these days

4 years ago, I was building a show car, I had a few long and lengthy talks with some tuning companys.

Because of the fact no one tunes 1.2's, You would have to get alot of the bits custom made. Custom Cams etc etc etc, Final cost would have been 5 figures. This would have been done properly and reliably with custom parts. Bee na show car I wanted chrome bits here and there which pushed it up, But it was a pointless exercise.

They even said to me themselves, You could put a 172 lump in it and Turbo that for less lol.

the new 1.2 turbo tce engine is exactly the same lumps as the 1.2 16v but with a wee turbo, both d4f engine code. 1.2 16v =75bhp 1.2 tce = 100bhp, only 25bhp differnce

the tce runs a tiny turbo with hardly any boost, you could swap all the parts over but its a lot of money for 25bhp, you could raise the boost slightly (i think but not 100% sure on the standard turbo spec) but even at that you wont get any decent gains and if you change the turbo for something bigger you'll probably blow the plastic manifold to bits!

is a toyota startlet glanza not a 1.3 turbo running 0-60 in like 6 or 7 secs tho.

tbh tho man i agree with everyone it wouldnt be worth the hassle.

yes but it was an engine built to run a turbo reliably, the compression ratio was designed for running boost, the gearbox and clutch were built to withstand the torque from the turbo, the pistons, rods, crank etc was all designed to run reliably at that power.

the 1.2 16v engine was designed to run reliably n/a (doesnt even do that very well haha!), which means to get decent power you need to uprate a lot.

also the starlet weighs nothing which is why they're so quick with just over 130bhp

can't really explain fully as each option takes you to a multitude of choices, but costs will depend on choice of new or used parts, how much you can make for yourself or acquire cheaply, and what end result you really want.

I think it's worth noting the charade gtti was making 99bhp from 998cc and 3 cylinders way back in the late 80s, and that's as standard with easy potential for 150bhp and some examples of 200+. Engine capacity doesn't need to be the power limit some think. I bet with some research (and I've no idea what would actually be available) there would be easily available parts from other renaults which would be cheap and easy to fit as upgrades to make a 1.2 stronger.

I have to admit though, the only reason I can think for doing this is if you come across some very cheap parts, and have a lot of free time to spend. I dreamed of doing similar to a mk1 golf 1.1 years ago, I even found a manifold with a turbo flange, but it just wasn't worth the work in the end

cheers for some of your help,

the idea just came from the new mk3 clios.. just an idea, but like most of you pointed out, as with money i put into doing whatever drastic i could probably get something faster via selling it with the budget on top without waiting for everything to be done...
i like my 1.2 and its a decent car, just want just abit more power... something like what R8 FTW would probably be better, remapped i asume? i dont know the side effects though.. like if it would change the mpg and other stuff.. knowing renault it might break altogether. want to do something reliable to get abit more power. il keeping it through uni and once i get out il probz be getting a 197 or something. just getting bored though tbh..

unfortunatly the 1.2 16v doesnt share any parts with the bigger engines so you cant really mix and match parts like you can do with some engines especially the older vauxhall engines.

my mate had an n/a 1300 16v starlet SR and we fitted an inlet manifold from a corolla and advanced the ignition timing and it got a brilliant power increase for a small n/a engine!
