Turboing my RSI....

Hello clio fans!

I have been thinking about turboing my Clio, i dont know anything about the engines so im here asking-is it even possible? and if so, where do i find a turbo and what will i need? Ive been told by a mate that ifs its the F7 engine there is a turbo kit? cheers

Don't bother.

It's a complete waste of time and money. As much as you love the car buy a faster one to start with, and then tune it.

Oh, well actually i cant buy another faster car as ive just bought this one within the last week!
Well if turboing is not the answer then what is? The car has had a few mods but none to the engine apart from an induction kit and a back box...so apart from a manifold, full system (which im going to order) and that filter what else can i do to the engine to get some more BHPs out of the little beast?

If you want to turbo it its the volvo 1.7t engine your after. Search around its been done a good few times before.

the rsi is a good strong engine but would cost alot to put a turbo on it your best bet is to do this it would be cheaper. you can get a doner car of ebay for cheap 440t/460t/480t

how much trouble is the conversion mate? what box did u use? are the engine mounts a straight swap? anything you think i need 2 know if i wanted 2 go down this route?

Its pretty much a clio engine with a Volvo badge on it matey..

all the mounts are in the same place, just the same as an RSi block apart from the turd blower and different manifolds IIRC

didant think it was to bad, i used the rsi gearbox and the engine mounts and altinater bracket have to be swaped over and if you are going to do this conversion dont bother with any of the standard hoses make your own and pay attention when it comes to the wiring, can fry your head!

what is wrong with the turbo's on them there good for 200bhp and there is no turbo lag from a t2

Nothing is wrong with the standard turbo.. i was comparing the RSi engine to the volvo one, stating that there essentially the same apart from the turbo and manifolds

Ok excellent, where would i search for an engine apart from ebay as their isnt any on there of the 440t/460t/480t engines? My dad owns a volvo V70, and ever since he has had it...well more since it got to 150,000 miles it has started to go wrong on him, Even though thats the 2.4T./ Are the 1.7Ts reliable? Can the turbos be uprated?

Ive found an engine from a M REG Volvo 480 Turbo 1.7. he says its done 130,000 miles and wants £100 for it... should i go for it?

all engines are good if you look after them and yes you can uprate the turbo for a t25/t28

it would fit but you would have to make engine mounts for it i thort about it but seemed to be alot of chew

Never had any dealings with this personally but it would seem the volvo engine is the way forward when it comes to renaults. I've seen them in 5's and here in this MK2 PH1.

The wiring would put me off though. I imagine you will need a Haynes manual for both cars so you know what wire does what.

It looks like actually quite a big job! Im gonna give it a pass for now and just stick with a manifold and exhaust, ill be happy with that i think for year or so then when ive got enough money saved up ill get the volvo engine sorted. RichRSi...your car looks lush! One last question which might make me change my mind about doing the Volvo engine sooner...How many BHP can i get from this Volvo engine if i uprate the turbo to the big T34 i think was said (which ever the biggest one is)? Thanks for all the help ive had though, has saved be a bundle!

Ktec or BB did the conversion i don't think BB have a garage any more though.

with a t28 and .60 exhaust side the most powerful one to date has just over 250bhp but have not been tuning this engine for long so still finding out what works

A turbo manifold ? Forget it its make your own.

I didnt say anything about a 'turbo manifold'? Make my own...um ok but thats gonna cost me a bit i think? ill see what i can do then if i cant buy one. Just wondering, is the Clio Williams the same for parts as the RSi? cheers

I have a clio mk1 16v with a T4 engine in it. It does take a bit more work than the 1.7 lump but it is 'do-able'.
