Turbo'ing the 1400.

  BMW E92/Audi S3
Before anyone says "Waste of money imo" and all that palava, im only asking what has to be done in order to turbo a 1.4 16v. I've been in a Punto GT 1.4 that was turbo'd and my ears were in the backseat. I loved it.

Depends on what power you are looking for a suppose, low boost and you shouldn't have to worry about the internals, much more and you'd have to uprate them at a guess.

How technically capable are you?

The conversion could be done relatively cheaply if you do most of it yourself!

I would, Its just i dont know a damn thing about turbo's i just love the power lol. Money will be the last thing on my mind in a few weeks

It would be a lot of custom parts and fabrication, difficult to pinpoint all the parts until you do the job, but essentially you will need

- Turbo and manifold
- exhaust modification
- oil feed and return
- water feeds
- boost pipes

if you want to do it properly you will need custom pistons and possibly rods, a good intercooler, cams, headwork and an ECU.

There will be lots of other issues along the way such as creating a boost tight seal on the inlet manifold, and routing your pipework.

Hope that gives you a rough idea of what's needed :)

They,ve got a point. A fully rebuild R5 engine can be picked up for around the £400-£500 mark.

A 1.4 turbo in standard form will probably kick out 130bhp or so bhp (a punto gt does, so i'm going along that line for a power figure) modded you'll see 170/180 bhp (or more, depending on spec) but it would be some messing about if you were to get it done yourself.

A tuned 5 gtt engine would be ok, providing you know the complete spec of it & it's not some bodge job - a fair few of them are these days.

Other than that, scrap the turbo idea & 2.0 it.

I was thinking that but. 2.0 engine conversion

I've known a few people running 200+ Bhp in R5 and Punto's, Anything is possible so if your serious do your research

LOL, why not?

Make more power and be cheaper than turboing a 1.4na clio engine!

crude to the extreme. the old pushrod lump is fun in a 5 but it's no better than an OK engine. A modern 16v will run rings around it, doesn't even use fuel injection ffs lol

Not really crude is it? Yes its a basic engine, yes it has under head cams and yes it uses pushrods to open its valves. I'm not sure what you mean by "a modern 16v runs rings around it"

This thread is about a chap that wants to add a turbo conversion to his 1.4 16v clio. He could spend 3 - 4k doing that when another option would be the straight forward change for a C1J lump.

The difference in cost between turboing his N/A 1.4 engine or dropping in a C1J lump is huge, he could buy the engine, fully re-build it and run a reliable 180bhp for less than a grand.

I got the impression from the other thread that you worked for or at Gdi? I therefore thought you would know your way around a gtt turbo engine and know what the potential of them? It may run on a Carb but how much money does that save on mapping costs a £10.00 micro drill set from maplins and a mechanics stethoscope's all you need to set the fueling!!

think you misunderstood me, I'm not saying the c1j is a bad engine, it's not at all, like i said they can be lots of fun but it is old technology. My personal tastes for conversions are retro cars with modern engines rather than the other way round. My reading of the original post was wanting to do something different too, so that's the way my thinking went :)

The R5 lump may be old, but get one built properly and you've got about 20 years of information and expertise to fall back on. Plus I'm sure I saw somthing about some bloke whi EFi'd his? Get's my vote...
