Tyre speed rating?

Can some one please explain this to me? I'm looking at buying tyres and there are all these letters...

H-
V-
W-
Y-

H is 125mph from memory
v 149mph
the other 2 are 149+

You need V or above. Alternatively google will explain all of the ratings to you.

I see, so shouldn't exceed those speeds?

u have to buy a tyre thats capable of yer cars maximum speed so H wouldnt cover a sports max speed where has V W Y etc do so can be used
basically the tyre wasnt made to go faster then its speed rating doign so could result in blow outs etc
