Uh Oh! Thick Grease on Drivers Wheels?

Rob

ClioSport Moderator
Cleaned the car tonight after Steve@Rsport lovingly sorted a few problems and whilst bent over (oh 'er) I noticed quite a lot of thick grease on the drivers front wheel???

From memory of looking over old threads, has the "CV something" split or something?

Basically, when I take the wheel off tmrw, what on earth am I looking for and how much is it going to cost me to fix it?

Also, what is it? Not gearbox fluid or brake fluid I hope? As aren't they both corrosive?

Panic over gay boy.

It had a loose CV boot and Fred fixed it when he did the suspension.

(Unless you mean fresh grease??)

The clip could have come off again then. It was deffinately the drivers side wheel and the clip was a crappy thin thing. Fred didn't have a man enough replacement so just put it back on.

cable tie for time being then just get a proper clip put on it next time its serviced will try and pop up in the week if needed. once the wheels off you will see the rubber boot behing the brake disc just check theres no holes, splits etc if its ok just cable tie it :)

I'd replace it to be safe tbh.

Clean all the grease off, horrible stuff but then at least you can monitor it for the time being to see if the area get's covered in it again.

Did mine yesterday after clip failed. PITA cleaning all the old grease off. Luckily caught it early so just filled up with fresh grease and a new clip.

I found brake cleaner did a good job but make sure you scrape as much off as possible with a plastic spatula or similar.

Part number etc please? I'll get one asap then and bung it on.

Damn you Fred! ;)

Oh and what do I use to get all the crap off the wheel?

Old video card, Ice scraper, Old debit card etc.

Then cover it in fairy liquid. Ainsley reckons thats the best at cutting through grease. (Srs!!)

So what actually is it then that leaking? i.e what is the grease?

If you did it yesterday mate, any chance you've got the part number etc? As my Renault are useless without one, or what can I ask them for and they'll definately know what I'm talking about?

Oh hai Daniel, cheers for the advice so far, glad its no biggie, or so I hope...

P.s what do you think of what I've done to it so far? ;)

Its CV grease, from the CV joint. The CV boot stops the grease coming out. Yours isn't. The boot is either split or come off of the CV cup. You'll see which of those it is when you take the wheel off but do it sooner rather than later as driving it with no grease in the joint will mean you'll need a new shaft very quickly.

Apart from the bastardisation of the rear bumper, I like it! :D

Its a split CV boot. Or a Loose/fell off CV boot.

Go to Renault, ask them for a ''Motrio O/S CV boot for a Mk2 ph1 Clio 172''.

Costs less than a tenner for the boot/clip and the grease. (Last time we did one).

Its a fcuking nause of a job to do mind you!!

Bugger, not what I wanted to hear (the "don't drive it" bit and the "b**ch of a job" bit)

I have to do 30 miles in it tmrw before I can do anything and I did 150 in it this weekend and god knows when it went :(

Cheers all, will try get it sorted asap :)

I've had exactly the same thing today. I noticed grease on my drivers wheel when giving it a quick clean yesterday, then adjusted my coliover today and found loads of grease on the inside of the wheel and around the hub. I also noticed the CV boot was loose. Bugger! going to take it to my local garage.

I had my passenger side come off 3 times and drivers side once. Oh the joy of renaults lol.

Proper easy to fix at least!

Definitely - it's an easy job m8. As for cleaning the grease off - Daniel's suggestion is bob on. The last time a clip came off mine, I took the wheel off and washed it down with some warm water and Fairy liquid. Feck knows what's in that stuff, but it did a better job shifting it than the degreaser did! :S

The clips alone were around £1.10 each, iirc from Reno. But you'll need to repack the boot (assuming it's not split) with more CV grease.

my clips were both broken when i picked my car up. so used jubily clips as cable ties are not man enough.

grease is dead cheap to

This has now happened with mine!

Will pop over to Fred when he is free to sort it out! :) Hopefully Monday!

Would be much easier and quicker on a ramp though?, I already got f*cking filthy cleaning the wheel when i discovered the grease. Better not get worse between now and then! Lol!

Also have a locking wheel nut that won't come undone! :(

Expanding boots FTW :D

If you left it too long to get the boot back on/replaced (O/S) would it cause the driveshaft to make noises on a hard left?
