Upgrading Speakers...

Hi guys,

I've always been really into my ICE (went through a stage of silly bass but i'm really past that now!) and I don't really drive about with music blaring anymore but it's nice on a long journey for it too sound good so I'd like a nice sounding system but for it to look totally std.

So my plan is to convert the 4 channel HU into a 2 pre outs so I can have a 4 channel amp for 4 speakers and after that very possibly use the other pre out for an amp for a 10" Sub. I'd put a bass controller in the ash tray so you couldn't see it but I could turn it right down when i didn't want it!

So I have a few questions...

1) What size front and rear are the speakers?

2) Has anybody used decent Co Axial speakers before? I've always used companents but as I don't want to add anything that doesn't look OEM and putting them in the top of the dash with the crossovers somewhere seems like too much hard work!! I was thinking of fitting 2 sets of Hertz Co Axial speakers front and rear, seeing what it sounds like and then maybe put a 10" Hertz sub in the boot.

3) Has anybody ever converted the speaker channels into pre outs? I've not personally but my mate who owns an ICE shop keeps telling me that's my solution and it'll be fine.

4) I know there's probably not a huge amount of people who are into ICE on here as it's more about the driving element of the clio's but has anyone done an OEM+ instal?????

13cm all round,dash off is a 20minute job and will all look oem

you can convert fine to pre-outs,but you'll lose the connectivity or rear speakers (unless you want to damage to oem headunit)

Convert the standard HU? Explain?! I want to upgrade the Cup sounds, but not massively wanting to swap HU........ Also i want some more bass, without a sub. Can 13cm speakers (uprated?) do this? I did have some infinity 5012i's (45W RMS 135W peak, means nothing to me btw) coupled with an uprated KW HU of some description, but it didn't give the extra ummmf i wanted tbh

with the right amp and components it will give you the added bass to fill the void however it will never replicate a sub install.

to convert standard headunit use a line output converter to change to phono

so...... (proper noob here) You simply use a line op converter to change the signal to phono, then from there i can amp up some replacement speakers? What size amp/components would be a good set up, with a bit of bass to suit

thats correct,the LOC changes it down from high input to low input
or you could just send the speaker cable all the way to the amp and hook it up to the high input on the amp (if it has it)

i absolutely love hertz and i cant even supply them

Doing it this way, does it give reasonable gains in sound quality/performance, or is it somewhat comprimised compared to an uprated HU?

Seems quite a lot of work - and money.

What about those Pioneer Components that are specifically designed for Renaults and a decent set of coaxial for the rear? - would that give a better note over standard speaks without spending a whack on amps?

the voltage output will be much lower so the gain will have to be kept lower or clipping will occur, uprated unit is better

the pioneers are a happy medium between standard speakers and amped upgrades

Upgraded HU will give 10X better sound... However, what I meant by an OEM+ install was keeping the std HU etc leaving it looking std but sounding nice.

I'm not doing it yet so will do a bit more research.

I might just chuck in some 13cm coaxials for now.
