Uprating front discs and pads - change the rears too?

If uprating the front pads and discs I've been told I should also uprate the rear pads at the same time - is this true?

After reading some posts it sounds like uprating the rear discs is a waste of time and money but should both front and rear pads been done all at the same time or can I just uprate the front discs and pads?

Don't worry about the backs.

They hardly do anything anyway!
