Urgent Advice needed on possible fuelling problem??

Friend of mine had issues start last Thursday in his Mk4 Golf 1.6. When accelerating in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear between 1800 and 2200 rpm the car starts to stutter (like it is doing kangaroo hops) almost as though there is a misfire. Once you get past that rev range it seems fine but it does make it an issue trying to get anywhere. We've changed the spark plugs and the leads with no luck... Any ideas??

Car was serviced this weekend too and hasn't made a difference. Although a rivet was found in the gearbox oil that seems to have sheared off the gearbox. He's been told that he'll need that part of the gearbox sorted either way but we dont see how this would cause the original problem...
Sounds more like a Fuelling problem to me....

Any ideas greatly appreciated...

We thought about that....
theres no way that the gearbox problem would cause the juttering though is there?

almost as if the fuel isnt getting through..its stuttering/struggling to accelerate. Dont know if that makes any sense... almost as if he was a learner driverand can't feed the clutch, but its being fed fine.
