Hiya Fellas
Sorry not really introduced myself on here as of yet but im Bob from Torque of the south motorsport.
We were the ones doing the dephaser & belt on Tims car.
Don't normally touch the frog stuff as mainly deal in the big power jap stuff such as gtrr35, Skybarges, pulsar gtir and so forth.
My mechanic had never come across doing a dephaser kit on one of these before as neither had I if im honest with you but as the fella said above ''its really not rocket science if you've half a brain'' lol
So in a nutshell we did the dephaser and belt plus a fresh water pump also but the dephaser itself (new one Tim supplied) would not stop rattling which obviously was an issue. Anyway we decided to remove it again and inspect it then the problem and issue he was having earlier became apparent and infact the knock which he assumed was the dephaser originally was only partially correct.
Only telling you guys as may help some of you out for cars you do yourselves in future.
The main knock was due to poor head oil flow which was causing the lifters to rattle and excess wear on cams, we actually spotted some particles blocking cam to dephaser oil flow also so back pressured the oil galleries etc to try remove debris. Once we had done this we then (prior to fitting) primed the dephaser itself with oil then fitted it which now has remedied the issue he was having. We knew the timing was spot on but Tim seemed to think that the pulley was from a Megane to which I wondered whether someone in the past had formerly fitted a 1.6 head to increase comp ratio but now I know this can not be done, as said we are no experts on these particular engines so you learn info like this along the way.
Tims car made virtually 180bhp on our dyno which I thought was quite high for an old 172 so that's what made me wonder about the head also.
There was also another small issue that Tim had unknowingly caused in his quest to save weight which made the car run and idle not at its best lets say which we noticed, that issue was easily resolved after slapping Tim round the head with a big wet cod:smile: Not gonna tell you what it was he had done as hes a nice bloke and wants to learn everything about his car, so he can tell you himself if he wishes.
Anyway Sunday came along and off to Brands hatch we all went Tim drove extremely well and car is damned quick for a frog mobil, Even just purchased a 197 myself im that impressed with his 172.
off topic but bit of a laugh none the less
Accolades of the Day went to my arch race rival in his R35 who would have beat the legendary BTCC driver Tom Chiltern who was giving passenger rides ''Hot Laps'' at £25 a pop...........unfortunately after my mate Ben reeling Mr Chilternm in at an alarming rate of knots in the 900bhp highly modified Litchfield GTR he decided to take the girly way out and pit when Ben was hanging off his bumper ready to take him out on clearways:down:
Im now trying to wind up Mr Chiltern so they have it out on one of their / our test days next year and I would not back against Ben beating him as certainly had the better of him on the day and Mr Chiltern damn well knows it too which was why he took to the pits. Just to rub salt in his wounds we were going to advertise ''Hotter Laps'' and undercut him a fiver:laughing:
Probably be my one and only post on here until next year anyways lol
But met some of you guys through Tim and all seem like a fair bunch of lads so we may organise a rolling road day for those interested next year dependant upon our workload / dates as extremely busy at the moment.
Will let Tim sort it out with mods/admin on the forum, but just to let you guys know we are a genuine company which was only formed a year ago after combining 3 other successful long term car businesses to form ''Torque of The South motorsport'' based in Southend on sea, Essex. The dyno we have 'in house' is a brand new Dyno Developments 4wd dyno the most accurate on the market today so if anyone needs us for that or anything else car /marriage guidance related:grin: either just drop us an email or have a word with Tim 'Trackslag172' on here and sure he will pass on your details
Going now as wore out my big fat digit typing all this
ATB for the New Year guys
