Urgent Help Needed.. Whining noise in 3rd and 5th gear....?

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this or could shed some light...

My car is a 1.2 16v 2001 model.

It started off being a quiet-ish whining noise when in 5th gear. The noise only occurs accelerating. If I take my foot off the pedal, it stops. Over the last week it has gradually got louder and now the noise occurs when in 3rd gear and sometimes even in 2nd and 4th.

I have no mechanical knowledge but I'm guessing it's something to do with the gearbox...?

Any help/info is much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Get the box oil checked and changed

There's no guarantee its box though, could be engine related, could be cv joint, wheel bearing, anything really. Hard to tell without hearing it.
