Urgent Help

My friends little 1.2 clio is a bit broken... It is only just running, struggling to do 20mph. Iddling at 500rpm, sounds horrible and has a warning light flashing (the engine one - but no stop light!)... Any ideas??

Is idling at 500 rpm unusual? if so im glad i read this thread becuase mine does all the time?

Mine will idle around 500 when its warmed up.
