Using lights on full beam on a m/way

Where do you stand regarding having your lights on full beam on a motorway.

Weve all been there 1am, motorway virtually empty, just the odd few cars comming the otherway, going along at 90/100..if you have your lights dipped you cant really see jack.

Is it exceptable to have your lights on full beam, would you dip them when traffic comes the other way, obvously you would dip them when you pass another car

If there really is no one about then why not?

Obviously dip them as soon as somebody comes into view, but thats common sense.

Do you mean Dipped as in Sidelights???

If it is i would never consider driving with dipped lights in the middle of the night!!!

If I was on the motorway with no streetlight I would maybe use them, but would definatley switch them off if someone was coming the other way

The half badboy bonnet doesnt help, its mainly seeing inot the disrtance sort of thing when they are on dipped beam. The dipped beam lights have never been great on my car.

Tom - I was looking for peoples opinions, and how is having my lights on full beam on a motorway gonna cause me to haver an accident, surley traveling at speeding, being able to see a few hundred yards infront of youis more dangerious. I know the highway code mate, chill out!

Does your silly boy bonnet cover your headlights and render them illegal for proper use on the highway?

Why didnt i think when i posted this topic that it would just be an excuse for people to lay inot me, just cus i have done something whihc is unique.

When i first got my car wiht std headlight bulbs in i couldnt see very far on dipped beam, this was sorted my putting better headlight bulbs in, now i have a half badboyed bonnet, visability is back to how it was when the car was standard!

Tom - As you are obvously so wise, maybe you culd point me in the direction of where exactly in the highway codse it mentions headlights on full beam on the motorway.

As obvously a less experienced driver i was seeking the advice of more experienced drivers in an attempt to make my driving safer, next time i just wont bother, ill just merrily carry on doing what i think, be it right or wrong!

He says it doesnt help matters. I can imagine that it reduces the distance of the beam quite a lot, but has no effect directly in front of the car.

This applys to ALL Roads. its very clear.

You MUST

use headlights at night, except on restricted roads (those with street lights not more than 185 metres (600 feet) apart and which are generally subject to a speed limit of 30 mph)
use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/21.shtmlU color=#0000ff Rule 201/U).
ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit at night.
Laws RVLR regs 24 & 25 & RV(R&L)R reg 19

<A name=94>

You MUST NOT

use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users.
Law RVLR reg 27

You should also

use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built-up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen
keep your headlights dipped when overtaking until you are level with the other vehicle and then change to main beam if necessary, unless this would dazzle oncoming traffic
slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights.

Well if im on the other side of 4 empty lanes, and a central reservation, how do i know if it causes them discomfort, it is not very clear, its like the majority of rules, open to interpretation.

As you will well know when vehicals are comming the other way often the bulk of thre light from their headlighs are hidden behind the central reservation, hence if their headlights were on full beam they wouldnt dazzle you

Mate if you know the answer why ask?

I answered your question, i feared for your safety and directed you to the OFFICIAL source of rules and regulations for the roads in the UK.

If that isnt good enough then sod ya.

Because i wanted to know if what i thought was right.

I didnt epect to get laid into by a forum moderator, for asking a perfectly innocent question. Just becasue something isnt so clear to someone else as it is to go there is no need to lay into them
