Valver Oil Filter

christ, ive read for years on here about people havin trouble gettin it off, when i got my valver i looked and thought, its not that bad, the GTT one was worse

how wrong am i, cant do it !

ordered some filter pliers from Ebay which should make it a lot easier to get off, will have another go next week when they come

I always used to get a garage to service my valver -
A, i couldnt be asked to change the oil in it etc.
B, there was no way i was going to struggle messing about trying the remove the filter.

Like most jobs on valvers, removing oil filters are a pain in the arse !

The best thing I find is to puncture it with a flat headed screwdriver, you can then use this to turn the filter. As for the new filter just do it up with your hand, you should get it tight enough.

Dont tell me its this hard - I am doing this at the weekend and it sounds like that sucks.

I intend on getting a chain tool around the f**ker and doing it that way.

Also some of the non Renault filters are taller , i had loads of trouble getting the old filter out.

The proppa item is only about 2" tall.

You wont be able to get a chain tool round it, literally impossible. Get a flat belt remover.

ive got a flat belt one, no chance

mine is an OE filter, both the one coming off and the new one going on

and what filters are you using ?........id never be able to get enough force with a screwdriver to puncture the filter, not sure what others are like but the Renault ones are pretty strong on the outside, plus room is VERY limited

Im glad I did it when I last took the engine out thats all I can say lol.

The one I took off had a hex head on it so you could undo it with a spanner.

*Forgot to say when you tighten it up you only need to do it a bit. Never tighten it up with a filter wrench as they are self tightening so youll never get it off again. Just do it up till it feels tight-ish with your hand.

easiets way is to undo the slam panel and go in at the side of the rad, yeah its a pain and takes a bit of muscle but its the quickets way to do it

National Tyres 20 quid Duckhams QXR change always seems attractive. Only option is as stated above pierce filter with screwdrives and loosen. Need a good method to tighten new one though, proper tool, as you can fumble and locate the new one in thread and hand tighten but you will find it leaks so needs tightening with a proper tool.

So what tool is best to try and do this job? I should in theory be going to GSF to get all the bits tomorrow so perhaps I can get a tool at the same time.

well ive got the strap type remover, and ive tried 3 times now and it just wont go on

my mechanic said he used filter pliers last time on mine to get it off, so ive ordered some off Ebay

Easiest way is to do it from underneath on a ramp, piece of piss then, that being said not many people have access to Ramps...lol

ive got a big scar on the back of my hand when i did mine last, scraped a nice think layer of skin off on the rad! lovely

i was faffing around for ages, got fed up, went in got a drink, and did it first try when i came back! always the way!

unbolt the top of the rad, and lean it forward, gives a icle bit more room! and i used a chain type tool, its a right pain tho!

up on a ramp, disconnect rear mount, rock engine backwards, screwdriver through the filter if it hasnt got a bolt on it. easiest way i have found. can get it off, ok (just tho lol) but couldnt find a way to get filter out of the bay. undo the rear mount!!!!

Youve got skinny arms brun.

bonnet up, gap between offside headlight and rad/slam panel, hand in there, grab filter......and if you havent got girly grip strength, you can undo it.

Large screwdriver/spike through it should do it...youll have more room what most for leverage what with the PAS pump etc missing

ive got girly grip strength then, it wouldnt come off, i did exactly as you said but it wouldnt come off

I did this at the weekend and will take a photo of my hands later on to show you!

It took me best part of an hour, both trying what ben said in between the headlight and front grille and then trying from underneath with the bottom coolant hose removed (needed to change the coolant anyway).

Eventually, with three puncture holes I got it off, at 11:00 pm working underneath the car on a trolley jack with a household light bulb for light!

I found puncturing it the best way and then putting the new one in from the top.

Youll also find having a mate to egg you on really helps. My girlfriend was a wonderful help just by egging me on to do it when giving up and having a beer seems the better option.

20 quid would get you filter and Duckhams QXR semi fitted at National Tyres..... It is appealing unless you already have oil and prefer fully synthetic.

As Rob pointed out. Get it on ramps and lie underneath. You can get a filter wrench in (I did) to loosen it and then undo and remove by hand.
