valver steering problem

i have noticed ive got alot of play in the steering on my 16v,i mean you can turn the wheel from 11 oclock to 1 oclock and the wheels wont move!this is starting to get abit scary now especially at high speed, theres also a knocking/rumble when i turn right and feels like something may be moving slightly, the car has powersteering which has also been getting loader lately

any ideas anyone?

oh and if its that bad its very dangerous and shouldnt be driven really, ya steering could go completely i been told

My 16v does this & I am currently awaiting Paul @ Infinicar to finish Rajks Williams before he can look at mine.

When I had my clutch done, Paul highlighted to me that I had a lot of play in the steering and it needed doing soon.

He currently is replacing the rack on Rajks Williams as it had a lot of play in the steering. He checked all other steering components as well as the rack & he said that the rack was causing the play in the steering.

There is a wait of 10 days on steering racks for Valvers from Renault as they havent got any in France & they are having to come from Germany. However GSF do them a lot cheaper than Renault & they got mine in 2 days.

Is the knocking that damo16v talking about caused by the steering, as mine is doing this & having checked everything else, I can only assume that it is something to do with the steering.

BTW.My car is off the road at the moment, as I realise that this problem could cause an accident.

Mine is awaiting a rack and it went on order last wednesday so god knows when ill get it... Its more annoying for me as this is the second one im waiting for - renault fitted the first one and it was a faulty part!!! Now been valverless for 5 weeks and stuck with some sh*tty 1.2 courtesy clio...sniff...:(

there is a cheaper way,the play is usaully down where it joins near the pedals inside the car, mine was exactly the same,if you pull the rubber gaitor off you can see,i put a spot of weld down each side of the joint, work fine! ;)

has anybody tried replacing just the track arms on their steering rack? ive heard it can be done on other cars. seems a bit daft to pay £170 plus fitting for a whole new rack if just a new pair of arms and rod ends will fix the problem....

Just a thought - can anyone definately confirm this as i phone up my garage and even they cant get a date! Also - mine went on back order last wednesday (17th) so when would be a resonable time to expect delivery (im in Aberdeen) considering the above point?? This is really doing my head in....grrrr......

The 10 day wait thing was what Renault told Paul at Infinicar.

The ball joints & track arms can be replaced according to the Haynes book of lies, they dont tell you how though. It is likely to be a Renault dealer only job, as I think that you need some kind of special tool to remove the arms, that only Renault have.

If this is the case, you are better getting a whole new rack fitted by a Renault specialist, as it will probably cost less than the new track arms at Renault & youll have somebody who knows what they are doing, unlike Renault as they probably dont see 16valves that often.

Anybody know about this knocking damo16 is talking about in the 1st post?

the knocking could be a shagged cv joint/wheel bearing/bottom ball joint..take your pick

Already replaced wheel bearings (peace of mind) & bottom ball joints(shagged). Will have a look at CV joints.

What do I need to look for?

Would this not have been soemthing that should have been picked up in the MOT?

Thanks

MOT might have missed it easily. you only notice bad cv joints when youre driving round a corner. best thing to do is take the car to a car park and drive round in a circle with full lock and listen out for a knocking/clicking sound.

If youve done the bearing and ball joint then its gotta to be the right hand outer cv joint. its a b**ch of a job to replace the joint and much easier to just replace the whole driveshaft with a new one. £70ish i think they are.

Having had this problem on my own valver, including rumbling round slight corners, and its not always the rack. Track rod ends often get blamed and replaced with no change. Before changing the rack, check the inner track arm joint, under the gaitor on rack end. These can wear, and it is often diagnosed as rack, or track rod ends, when it is these. They are about £56 (well drivers one is) from Renault (my dealer says the are a known problem) and are a c£@t to change. The nut that holds them on is a ratchet type, and is destroyed on removal. This makes it hard to move and given that you pull against the rack when loosening it, its a bit scary, as bugger it and youll need a new rack anyway. Check them by jacking one side up, and reaching in push/pull track arm, whist looking at inner joint (play is really noticable if you undo track end from hub unit first). I got my dealer to do it as I was a bit scared to pull too hard against rack, half hoped they would burst the rack, so I could get one for free, but it came off ok. Difference in car was unbelievable, felt like a new cars steering again (apart from obligatory valver steering pump whines), this help anybody?

Ive got a new rack already, as I have a load of stuff to take back to GSF, so I got it for next to nothing with the returns, less than what Alex got charged for new inner track arm joint.

Ill get Paul to fit it & from what he was saying about Rajks Williams & having driven mine, he is saying the symptoms are the same & a new rack should fix it (fingers crossed!!).

Ill get him to look at the cv joints as well. I would check them out myself, but it seems everytime I attempt to do something with my car, it just turns into more grief.

Alex, did they need a special tool to remove/put back on the inner joint? im hoping that i can do this myself because only one side has gone.

my column was knackered did the same thing as in move fromm 11 to 1 and the wheels did not move, problem was steering column aswell which i found out on monday and was also told that there is none in the country, managed to get it sorted the same day. the great guys at TORSION TUNING who did my conversion found me one, and the car drives soooooooo much better and safer

Bennyboy, not a difficult job, just need right size open ended spanner (think it might be 19mm) and a bit of strength. I didnt tackle it myself cause, didnt want to kill rack (you can see it twisting inprotest, although I am assured that it is rare for rack to be damaged in this way) and that it is much easier to do with car up on a ramp. Think I would do it myself next time, so give it a go, if you cant get it off, then go to a garage, but if it you do, new one goes on dead easy, job done. p.s. remember to get your tracking done, always forget myself
