My parents had this fitted to their camper van and it is pretty much invisible. The stuff they has fitted is apparently "self-healing" and you really have to look hard to even see the edges.

I have applied to small areas of the car, but I found it quite tricky, so I wouldn't personally attempt a large area. However, there are DIY kits out there and I think you need a lot of patience to do a good job.
