You'll get a 3.2 Evo for £4k. No problem at all.

Yeah but the evo wasnt as good as it had vanos that causes loads of problems. My dad had 3 e36 m3's and the pre evo 3.0 was far more raw and equally as quick. Ignore the 40bhp difference. in reality there is very very very little in them apart from the 3.0 is a better more reliable car!!

Disagree there fella. The Vanos isn't a problem and is a bit of an old wives tale. I've not heard of anyone buying an Evo and having Vanos trouble, it's just one of those things.

There is a power difference, stock, ours made 260whp, which is about 320hp so standard power, just buy one with a full BMW service history and it should be good.

Deleting the vanos can get you some good power gains coupled with cams, but then it is a road car, and vanos is very good.

I'm sorry mate, but thats b****cks.

I had a 3.2 that was rolling roaded (in the same session as your Clio might I add!!) at 321.9 bhp. No standard 3.0 will match that.

My car was a track/ weekend abuse car and never put a foot wrong.

All that vanos b****cks is just that. b****cks.

Vanos gets noisey thats all. Owners have them changed to get rid of the noise.

S50B32 3.2 has a bad rep. Its something those in the know ignore.

The E46 M3 engine has more problems but you never hear about them lol

i swear the 3.2 was a problem free engine, remember reading it somewhere, my bro had an M coupe pritty sure that was a 3.2 not the 3.0. 170k on the clock and it was spot on.

Hate to bring some reality to this convo, but i've been a member on the largest e36 forum for 5 years now and have 1st hand experience of the 3.0 & 3.2 ...

1. Daniel - im going to assume your 321bhp was at powerstation. So was mine. Take it with a pince of salt. Their rollers overread horribly.
2. Evo twin vanos does 'fail', ie get noisy/grumble, mostly the rolls royce version though apparently. Some cars are fitted with one made by sachs (mine was), this is more reliable & partly explains why some fail & some dont - its luck of the drawer as to which one you get tbh.
3. Most people dont realise, but 3.0s also have a vanos system, but its single vanos instead of twin and far more reliable. If it does break, its pennies from a breakers to replace, not £500 + shipping/fitting from Dr Vanos in the US.
4. 3.0s nearly always make their book power at rr days, evos dont.
5. Evo gearboxs are weaker & SMG is horribly unreliable. The 5 speeder is a much nicer box as well tbh.
6. Evos have a quicker steering rack, which makes for easier correction of the oversteer that usually occurs on exciteable driving.
7. 3.0s are more snappy on the limit, this can be countered by fitting the staggered set up from the 3.2, ie 7.5" wide front, 8.5" rear. It is 7.5" all round on the 3.0 as standard.

Me. Money no object & cash in bank for a rainy day, Evo. As a viable ownership proposition 3.0. I've looked at a few cheapies now though, & most of them i wouldnt let my parents dog sleep in, let alone drive it anywhere ....

What he said. lol.

I just go on the fact that nearly all the e36's developed on Northloop are non evo's and there must be a reason for that.
