Video capture software for XP64 or Vista 64?

I'm really new to any of this, but have borrowed a Canon MV630i analogue camcorder and want to offload the video to my PC.

I've connected a 4 to 6 pin Firewire-400 cable to it and tried allsorts of options on the camera - but the PC just doesn't pickup on the feed coming to it. I've tried the inbuilt Windows Movie Maker stuff on both XP and Vista - but again, neither sees the camcorder connection.

Are there any other suggestions? Having looked on Canon's website - it should be able to do it when used with a Firewire cable. Maybe I need specific video capture software?

That's what I was hoping for - but it doesn't. I'm wondering if Canon are talking crap and that this camcorder is of such low spec, that it can't transfer video?

It comes bunbled with allsorts of useless sh1te like Windows Messenger plug-ins but nothing of substance like a video editing suite.

Some devices do not function unless you install the specific software needed for that device on the computer first. My missus' dad is well into video editing and uses Pinnacle software but it loves to eat all your system resources! I'm not sure whether they have released a 64 bit version of any of their software though.
