Viewing a 182 - Haggling

Hi guys,

Joined this forum about a year ago as around this time I was planning on getting my hands on a 182, the time has finally come to upgrade from the 15 year old hand me down Corsa I've driven since I was 17.

I'm viewing one this evening:

Black Gold 182, both cup packs, 54,000 miles, completely standard, belts done.

Full service history, some done at Ren-tech, belts were done at JMS. It has 12 months M.O.T but only 1 months tax. Looks to be in very good condition appart from a slight scuff on the front left alloy apparently but I haven't see a photo of this yet. I was planning on using these as haggling points. Asking price currently is £5,450 and I was going to offer £5,200 depending on the condition when I see it in person & how it drives (-200 for Tax and -50 for a wheel refurb.) How does this sound?

I was going to pay by CHAPS bank transfer or bankers draft but have decided to pay in cash. This should give me some more haggling ability but I haven't a clue as to why?! Should I get some form of written reciept as theres no way of logging the transaction otherwise?

I've a long list of things to check that I've compiled from reading buyers guides but would appreciate any other tips, advice, things to look out for etc that would come in useful :)

Thanks in advance,

BennyC

might as well offer 5k and be prepared to settle on 5.2k./

cash is fine write out 2 basic contracts (sold as seen, price, date etc.) , and get him, yourself & a witness to sign both, sign the V5 job done.

Thats a bit pricey, I'd be looking at less that 5K, I paid 5K for mine (in September 09) on 49K, thats with the belts done, standard in good condition.

I think the price is alright RB is worth abit more IMO,

Also if someone offered to pay me by chaps etc i'd tell them to jog on, cash all the way.

I wouldn't necessarily, but I wouldn't release the car to them until I had confirmation from the bank that cleared funds were in my account. Same with a bankers draft - and to be honest if they bought that amount of cash we'd both be going off to the bank and depositing it in my account, following which I'd hand over the keys!

Make sure you HPI it first of all-

Price wise- an 05 would be around your 5k Mark poss 5.2 for a minter but If it was a 54 or 04 id be looking for less-

all depends on what you see infront of you-
car park dents are expensive, steering wheel is over a 1 spot, Mats, tyres all ad up!

Some bits that people over look Assuming you have a good list already-
be thorough- check the stereo wrks including the CD shuttle-

Check the cruise works-

Check the inside of the service book first page should have a sticker of the cars info including chassis number & stereo code etc-

How many owners--? Hopefully no more than 4--- I can check if you PM me-

Good luck with the purchase-

I would see no problem paying the way that suits you and the vendor. You can still haggle over the price but it's no good haggling unless you pay him a deposit, the vendor will not take you seriously. £100 in cash(subject to checks) would be fine for most vendors and show you are not a timewaster. You can then arrange your money transfer, road tax,HPI and other checks meantime.
As for the asking price I'm not up on 182' s values so Ican't advize.

I offered £1100 under the asking price for my 182 when i got it, the guy was not impressed at all lol.

Offer £4800 to begin with imo, i have always paid cash with a receipt, and recently me and my family have started HPI'ing cars too. Not worth the risk not doing these days.

as above offer 4800-4900.. If its on for 5400 he is prepared to let it go for 5000 easily, nobody really expects to get the asking price.

I love how this guy wants the seller to pay his road tax for a year. Lol ask him for 3k for your fuel bills too and 1k for your insurance. It's not a brand new car there 5 years old and there not gonna be perfect.

I checked with the OP the price of the car isnt that bad really on a 5 plate as well-

Perhaps he is thinking- let the tax run out then because someone is going to haggle a bit let the price of the tax be the haggle price, hence hes actually not losing out-
instead of taxing it & spending £120, listing for 5.4k & still losing on the haggle-

I think the OP secures for 5.1k-

It is especially important to get an HPI check with the Log Book Loans that have come about.

You need to be absolutely certain that there is no finance outstanding on the car and no loans secured on the car.

If there is a loan secured against the car by way of a log book loan then even if you have a receipt for purchasing the car they can still take it off you.

buy mine and save a grand.same miles, scuff on the front left wheel, thiught you were talking about my car at first only thing is mine is arctic. everything just been replaced including tensioners, belts, dephaser, water pump.

Bloody traffic was a nightmare!

Got there around 8, gave it a good look over, looked through receipts, had the boot floor up, check the cans of foam, jack, locking nuts, engine bay for the under cover, splitter was in one peice, everything was tip top appart from:

Cracked foglight glass
1 windscreen stone chip passenger side
Very, very few light stone chips on the bonnet
The front left wheel scuff
Wiper blades could do with a change.
1 months tax

Asking £5450, offered £4.8K cash, said he was looking for £5200 and we worked back deducting repairs and settled on £5k with a full tank.

Probaly could have pushed a bit further.

Mum was being a nightmare on the phone, I'm generally quite trusting and she however is not which is good obviously. I ended up leaving my drivers licence and taking both keys. Transferring £5k by CHAPS tomorrow, he didn't seemed bothered about having it in cash. Big house though, which I did go inside before anybody thinks he might have just parked out the front of it!

Pics to follow shortley.

Thanks for all tips/advice!

Black mark on the top of the wheel is just dirt.

Looks like a good buy for the money, good condition too

Who is the prev owner on here, given its got a CS sticker

Thanks guys.

The windscreen repair should be free on the insurance, though if the chips un-repairable then it'll be £75. No idea as to how much a fog glass will cost but I can't see it being expensive.

Hopefully that stain should lift out too.

So other than the wheel refurb, windscreen chip and fog light glass nothing else needs seeing to yet.

Will wait a few weeks before getting a refurb as (*touch wood it doesn't*) it might get curbed again while I still learn the width of the car.

Will give it a thorough clean on Sunday.

Edit: Yeah he is a member on the boards though was just after advice on where to go to get work done. I think the previous owners were too.

The front wishbones were also replaced recently as the rubber had perished on them, or something like that. Didn't quite say on the receipt.
